Safe to take?
Hi there, I overcooked it in the gym the other night and I'm a bit sore! My question is can I take some anti inflamatorys which I have from last year? They were prescribed to me for a toe injury but worked wonders after only 3 tablets. I have 27 left.
They are called DICLOFENAC. I'm not going to go to the Drs over such a thing and spend £7.50 but more to the point I'll be better by the time I'd get an appointment
Cheers, Jonny

no
They should only be used when you have suffered inflamation from an external injury, not through muscle tearing which is the process that happens internally from any kind of training.
If you over cooked it and you're still feeling sore two days later then I recommend you stop doing weights/that particular training and just do lots and lots of stretching to get your blood moving around which results in the crap moving out of your muscles/damage area and fresh blood and oxygen going in to accelerate the repair process.
The pump people see a day later from training is actually the swelling/inflamation from training.
You can over cook your training and always feel sore if you don't stretch prior to training, don't stretch whatever area you are working on during training (e.g. between each set, sprint etc) and stretching after training.
Stretching helps pull the muscles fibres apart, engorge them with fresh blood and oxygen and will result in proper definition, muscle growth and strength. I am amazed at how many people I see training who don't do any kind of stretching.
Finally if you feel sore under the surface layer then this indicates damage to the outer layers of the muscle fibres, for this I recommend finding a good martial arts outlet or homeopathic place and purchasing some stuff called Thai Oil.
The one you want is the proper Muay Thai stuff, has medicine mixed into it and the oil is a special blend that acts as a transport agent sending the medicine directly through the skin to the damaged tissue, fibres and nerves - wash and dry prior to using it as it will carry anything through the skin including water and germs!
Hope that helps,

I take Diclofenac for Tennis Elbow and Gout. It has a wide variety of uses, but self medicating is never a good idea.
It is also the active ingredient in Voltarol Gel for strains etc.

oops forgot to say, as above... I have in the past suffered like hell the day after training, but its all about the micro tears lol. Unless its unbareable, try and leave it, just keep mobile, and have a soak.

Nurofen, not Diclofenac.
Diclofenac works over time, it's not a quick fix. You might find the ointment form, Volterol, helpful, but by the time it's had a chance to work you'll probably be a lot less sore anyway. Stop being a ***** and enjoy the soreness, it's a sign you'll grow.

Can recovery time be reduced? In TV sports reports over here I often see AFL players (and others) in the pool/ocean post game. Does wading in cool/cold water help with muscle soreness?

What's the worst that can happen? Internal bleeding followed by a painful death. 1 in a million chance
Go for it what's the worst that can happen. The missus had a stash of co-drydomol prescribed after an operation, worked really well when I pulled my back, and few beers and I was away with the fairies
