I've decided to give cycling a go rather than running for a bit, as my throat hurts with the cold air ..
I'm looking to spend £50 so am not expecting the world !
Found this one on ebay .. wondered if it was worth it ? or if anyone NW way has one going they want rid of ?

At 50 quid keep it simple, that is a horrific pile of sh1te, one of my lads has something similar, was sorting it out earlier, its evil.
Nobody apart from Downhill MTB riders "Needs" suspension, nobody needs £50 MTB suspension because its ****, its heavier, you compress the spring using valuable pedaling energy and it doesnt really work, its not damped properly.
Look for a Rigid or Hardtail MTB, older but well looked after, or a Racing bike of some description.
DONT be tempted by the bikes I saw in Tesco for £49, the brake levers flex as they are made of plastic, no way would I entrust my safety to a pice of crap like that.

Serious if your spending £50 see what the bike shop has second hand. If you were closer I would offer you the Raleigh we have in the lounge for £80
Rigid or hardtail, dont expect anything more. In fact I would be tempted to say rigid only for that sort of money.

I'll shoot down to the bike shop and have a look .. cheers
mountain bike, Bikes, Aluminium, 20 inches items at low prices on eBay.co.uk
Few there but all over budget.
Personally would not dip below a couple of hundred for a new one, based on exactly what you just said, in case they snap. Never nice lol.
s/h is the way

agreed with what has been said regarding cheap suspension bikes, the extra weight and "bobbing" wastes pedaling power.
Raleigh bikes in general are heavy, very heavy.
look for a schwinn or giant, trek on ebay (rigid no suspension, hardtail front suspension), if you go for a larger size or dodgy colour you could get a decent bike for around £50.
I paid £67 for a trek hard tail, but it needed a new inner tube, tyre and new brake blocks and a general clean / service, cost about £30 to be usable.

I can never tell when people are joking about this ...thanks for the replies .. local bike shops tried to sell me some expensive bikes.. ones got one with just front for £75 but he said he was closing so I need to call tomorrow ...
Surely I can help a Scoobynetter out with unwanted junk
I have an old GT hardtail MTB that I would consider selling for that price. Front shock needs some TLC and the front deraileur will need replacing at some point.
Its a good frame though, not that heavy, etc.

As above, don't bother with anything that has any suspension whatsoever at that price!
For £50 you wont get anything usable.
But if your anything like me it will just be a passing phase anyway and the mountain bike will turn into a clothes maiden in the garage.
I got mine through a cycle to work insentive, paid £800 Ive done 30 odd miles and thats it in 18 months.

I do a lot of sprinting !
You could get something half decent new for £300 .it would have some ok kit on it and woulnt break after 5 mins.
Those really cheap ones dont last and you cant repair cos the bits are really odd sizes etc . A secondhand one from a shop would be a good bet .£250ish last years model? If your budget can go to that
If you buy really cheap you will generally get crap

Keep looking.
Im biased i used to spend hours trying to repair workmates bikes that they had bought from really cheap megastores "toys r us" etc for less than £100.
The bearing ,thread sizes etc were different from the uk so couldnt get spares
Stick to main brands GT,Specialized etc if you can

Pimmo how is your credit rating? .......go buy a decent Carrera bansee X or similar on a Halfords store card, and have done with it.
Take it over 12months and you wont notice the money going out.

Ive never had a store card, but if it was my only way of getting something I wanted I would do it........and worry later.
I suppose thats why the country is in the state its in.

Sorry... had a bad experience with a bike from Halfords a couple of months ago, wouldn't touch them with a long pole now
Suffice to say, I bought a replacement bike from an independent store a couple of weeks ago and it's much better; the bike I should have bought in the first place, in fact.
