Idiots proved to be working at the council
Who in their right mind would think this would have been a GOOD idea.
Visibility reducing barriers erected in Telford - Motorcycle News
Thank god I don't live round Telford way or I'd be done for "reckless chainsaw use"

Only idiots can get employed by a council. Those with a little more about us, tend to get employment elsewhere.
Unfortunately, those that are left are allowed to make decisions! Good decision makes think though all the ramifications if implementing something.....a council/local government worker is incapable.
You should check out Northamptions 12.5 million town centre road "improvements".

These barriers (well, not that roundabout but a lot of others where I used to live in Berks) have been around for ages. For exactly the reasons the guy gives in the article. *Supposedly* to stop rear end shunts. But, meanwhile, out in the real world .......

I wonder if the people who thought that idea up also think you need to stop at every roundabout regardless of traffic?
Its this increasing trend of feejits that is the main cause of stop/start congestion in my area; Stopping at roundabout junctions for no reason other than there "may" be a car on the island - despite plenty of time and space to merge with flowing traffic.

I've seen these on the A50 at Uttoxeter as well.... utterly stupid idea. You can't approach a roundabout and smoothly drive through when it's clear. Nope, you have to damn near stop and accelerate away.
It isn't a good idea any way you look at it. Just some numpty who saw ONE minor good point and ignored every other bad one.

Slowing down and constantly accelerating causes more air pollution than normal driving, which is exactly why the "geniuses" of Sutton Council have decided that every road (bar major A roads) has to have as many speed humps as is possible to install in said road.

Absolutely terrible! My driving instructor always used to shout at me when I stopped at a round about when I didn't have to. 'You're not looking far enough head again you plonker!'.

Having done contract work for 3 different councils and had some unfortunate dealing with a certain council that chased me for 2 + years for council tax for a property I no longer owned - I have to agree that 95% of the people that work for local councils are complete idiots with no common sense and cant get employment else where & hence turn into power obsessed little hitlers .
One interesting fact I noticed when working for councils is that they have a large proportion of non drivers & mostly rely on public transport.
Could be some of the reason for most of their stupid road related ideas.

We've have them round our way for a long time and they do work, ie people have to slow down to a crawl before entering the roundabout. I'm not sure if they actually stop rear end shunts, but they certainly slow people down. I don't recall the accident records for these roundabouts they are on prior to being installed.
So in this sense they are not idiots, though I agree that slowing people down at every opportunity (proven accident black spot or not) due to lobbying by the anti speed brigade is verging on dictatory.
To be honest if it was a choice between slowing people down by legal enforcement/fines/points on the licence or having passive systems (without fines/points/courts etc), then I'd rather have the passive system. But of course that's not the governments goal as where would all their stealth taxes come from then?

We have these on a roundabout near us. The roundabout used to have good visability on the approach, especially at night as you could see the lights of other cars way before you got to the entrance to the roundabout.
Then they stuck up these black barriers, so the first time i approached at night i thought it was clear, couldnt see any lights, right up until i was about to drive onto the roundabout when i saw 2 cars at the last second!!!

I disagree with most comments above. They are not such a bad idea. Have you tried to pull out on to a roundabout with a 44 tonne artic? If cars are flying round a roundabout you cannot safely enter the ra without the potential to cause an accident. The idea is to reduce the speed of approach so when on the ra, vehicles are going much slower.
As a saftey measure, it does exactly what it's designed to do.

so why not just remove all the roundabouts and make them into junctions then?
roundabouts are supposed to help traffic flow, not stop every car, every time

Council pen pushers are usually stupid, they are there because they can't hack productive enviroments where their jobs would be at risk.
They are well protected when it comes to their jobs being at risk as they have manager upon manager etc. to pass the blame down to.
It is very likely that there was some money left in the budget when they came up with that idea, if they hadn't done something with the money it would have been taken off them for the next year.
