The first manned mission to the moon took place. Hastily put together to beat a Russian attempt ( that never actually happened ) the crew of Frank Borman, Commander, James A. Lovell and William A. Anders, took off from KSC at 07:51, on a hazardous mission to circumnavigate the moon, and take hi-res photos of the Apollo landing sites.

On the way round, Anders took probably the most famous photo in history.

i remember us watching it on a B&W TV drinking Olvaltine in our pyjamas !! it looked real then !
