VAT slashed, where are the savings?
Have the VAT changes taken effect?
Because I haven't noticed a difference in prices, stuff is still over priced around my area and it seems people are using the catch phrase "VAT discounts" to prop up more prices.
Anyone noticed anything (drop in price, the same or increased cost on some items)?

I noticed Homebase claiming to pass the VAT saving on. However we went to Homebase for some Christmas stuff and noticed that the EXACT same products with the label changed from Sainsburys to Homebase was being sold at over double the price.
I know they are the same group, and I feel they really should have a bit of consistency..... I'll give them VAT cuts

Sure it was someone like Currys who had an advert in the paper with really odd pricing.
People said shops wouldn't sway from £9.99,£39.99 etc but these prices were like £9.87 and £23.72 etc..you get the idea

I doubt you'll see much difference either, everywhere insists on 'rounding' (and I use the term loosely) everything to £x.99 anyway.
Plus, although VAT has gone down, fuel duty has gone up - and businesses can't reclaim that. So, the cost to the retailer of every single product that ever has to be transported just went up

I bet you a Vodka & Tonic Homebase and Sainsbury's are not owned by the same company.
Homebase are part of the Argos group.

the 2.5% cut in VAT is absolutely pointless. It works out that you save £2.13 off £100. My dad's not changing any prices in his shop, and quite rightly too, the amount of time it would take to go through and change every single price to take account of such a small drop is ridiculous.
I had to go to Tesco's on Saturday and spent £20, they were advertising the fact they were giving the VAT back at the till so guess how much I saved...... 8p!!! WOW!! (bear in mind that the majority of the stuff in there is VAT free anyway) what a load of rubbish! A load of hype for nothing, as usual

Argos and Homebase are both owned by Home Retail Group. Sainsburys sold Homebase to Schroder Ventures (as was then) back in 2000. They then sold it to GUS plc who spun out that and Argos into Home Retail Group (details below).
So there you go (do I get a vodka & tonic as well?)
Gordo
Homebase was founded in October 1979 as a joint venture with the Belgium retailer GB-Inno-BM (GIB). J Sainsbury Plc held a 75% controlling interest and GIB the other 25%.
Homebase more than trebled its size in 1995 when the company acquired the Texas Homecare business from the Ladbrooke Group Plc. Sainsbury announced in spring 2001 that it had sold the Homebase business to Primera (formally Schroder Ventures) and in January 2003 Primera sold Homebase to GUS Plc. In October 2006 Homebase, along with Argos, demerged from GUS Plc and became part of the Home Retail Group.

I'm guessing I might be about £10 a month better off (if that), and they'll claw that back off me in very few months indeed with the NI increase. Debenhams made me spend money with 20% off... I ain't even going to bother to find a parking place for 2.5%!
I guess if you're buying a car its good - but if a 2.5% VAT cut convinced me to buy a car at the moment I'd be seriously wondering if I could afford to buy it at all.

it's all bollocks really isn't it? most people don't have a bloody clue what price stuff is at the best of times, so throw a figure out there that doesn't end in .99 and some people will go 'wow, must be a great saving' what a load of ****
just had a mail from screwfix and the whole page is littered with .72p, .94p etc, do they really expect me to believe they've done me a deal?? it was probably a pound cheaper last week
**** me i'm in a mood today

costs of running a business have shot up this year a hell of a lot more then 2.5% or whatever the rate cut was, so i would expect most places to say they are not going to raise the prices up as high as they were going to before to compensate for it and you are lucky with what you get

At Homebase this weekend (no clue who owns it and don't care ... ) and they were taking off the VAT at the till. In a shop today and they were doing the same. Something that was 19.99 became 19.56 or about .... whoop dee do. We're all going to have a very merry Xmas. I can't see for the life of me why the whole country isn't cheering Ali Darling in the streets for this audacious solution to the country's economic woes. That incidentally started in the US. The sub-prime markets collapsed don't you know ...Ooops. Sorry. That was the bad dream just ending .......
