Default 1080i plasma and Blu-ray

I have a Panasonic Viera 50PV500A plasma that can handle 1080i. Is there any point getting a Blu-ray player? And if so, can anyone recommend such a player?

Cheers

Mark

yep dont get sucked into all the 1080p nonsense, 780p looks great on my plasma.

to be honest the best value blu ray player is a ps3, its net enabled and updatable and also has a games machine attached for good measure

Thanks, Phil

Good to know that I don't need to replace the Panny.

I've heard the PS3 is a very good player but TBH I'm not really after games console. And besides, they're around AUD$700 whereas Sony BDP-S350 is under $400 and gets good reviews as does the Panasonic DMP-BD35 Review - Blu-ray & HD DVD. Anyone have any experience of these players?

I believe the guts of the Sony units are the same, and as Sony pioneered Blu-ray, I'd stick with them. I have the same set up, but got the PS3 due to the cost. Shame it's so much over where the sun shines! Some compensation for living in this damp miserable country!

I have the Sony BDP-S350 on my Samsung 50" Plasma and find that whilst it does take a while to warm up (the blueray player that is - over a min to get going?) it does produce some stunning pictures when compared to normal Dvd, the clarity and depth of colour in the films are awesome. It may not be the best blueray player that is available but for the money i think it is very good and a worth while starting point

That's a 720p TV - you be better off setting a Bluray player to ouput in that format rather than 1080i.

Many thanks for the replies, guys.

I shall be taking a look at the Sony BPD-S350, more in my price bracket ATM.
