Boats
Anyone else got a boat?
We have a little Salcombe Flyer 440 (14.5ft) with a Mercury 2 stroke 60 - goes like stink. Sort of a Lotus Elise of the sea (not much power but so damn light that it's still quick) and good for waterskiing and generally larking about.
Being able to jump on it (on a pontoon mooring) and whizz to Falmouth/St Mawes/a secluded beach/a waterside pub is one of life's true pleasures.
Also seem to see a lot of wildlife from it - seals, kingfishers, the odd peregrine, etc.
We did have a sailing boat but it was bloody hard work getting it down the river to the sea (about 6 miles) on a 2hp outboard and we are both cr4p sailors (me especially) anyway!
And no it wasn't expensive. Cheap and simple.

Until last year we had a 6m RIB with a Suzuki DF140. A bit like the one in this vid: YouTube - Ribcraft 5.85 Rigid Inflatable Boat. Seriously capable craft. Not living near the coast we had to make a weekend of it. With young kids it wasn't going to happen so we got rid of it. Really miss it.

nice -- used to keep a boat down that way
father in law had a house in St Just in Roseland
got married at the church there (1996) and sailed around for the reception at St Mawes castle

St Mawes is great too - although stupidly busy in season.
The top photo is about 3 miles east of St Mawes - just round the coast a bit.
We were the only ones on the beach for over an hour on probably the sunniest day of the year!

Yeah it went like the clappers. Don't remember the exact speed but around 40 knots I think. Great in the rough stuff as the tubes worked like shock absorbers. The engine was amazingly quiet too. Had always planned a trip from Christchurch to Scilly but due to a series of mishaps it never happened. One day!

Seen that (climbers) from a boat on the North Coast - nutters.
Another joy is anchoring up on a sunny day and having a cold beer/lunch/whatever without any cares in the world.
Love it!

Yes spent many long summer days on "summers beach" St Mawes
foolling around in dingies, windsurfers, and canoes
pasties and a pint from the "Rising Sun"
and pottering around St Just creek - powered by a seagull outboard

Used to take us 1.5 hours to get to the Pandora with our 17ft Cornish Crabbers Coble with a 2hp engine.
Now takes (when the Harbour Master isn't looking - been told off twice now) about 15 minutes!
A friend of ours parents own St Mawes boatyard - who know most of the people there. So go there quite often.
About half an hour (when Harbour Master is on patrol) and we're there - quicker than driving!

There are a couple of them but yes - I think there's is the bigger one.
Have you seen that chateaux type house opposite? Went on the market for about £8 million a while back! Stunning place though.
Nat - any rivers or canals near you?!
Mamoon - Cost us around £4k with the trailer and we've smartened it up a bit. Pontoon mooring is £600 a year. Insurance is about £150. We get it antifouled every year (as it's always in the water) - £200ish. Servicing is about £100 (once every year or two).
Fuel use is heavyish because it's 2 stroke but each trip right out uses around £10-20 in fuel. A day out will be a bit more (we have two 5 gallon tanks - tend to use 1/2 - 1 tank per go but we do razz it around). Uses very little 2 stroke oil - probably a litre every four tanks of petrol.
All in all it's pretty good vfm for such a huge amount of fun and flexibility. Especially in August bank holidays when the world is in a traffic jam and we just nip to a beach on the boat!

Oh and if anyone likes motorsailors (I find them a bit boring but they look nice) the inlaws had this built and shipped down to the Med last year:
Fisher 46 in steel and totally custom built - weighs almost 30 tonnes!!! Try dragging that off the beach when the tide drops!

My mate at work has this:
IIRC there is some huge V8 kicking around in the back of it.
I nearly bought his Bayliner off him when he changed to the Regal but my wife didn't see it as good an idea as I did!

g7prs - is that a Canadian Canoe?
I do rescue boating for our village regatta. One race was with these and one capsized. Two were okay, one panicked big time. I rushed over to her in the little 12ft rescue boat and after a lot of struggling, dragged her in. The reason for the struggle? She weighs 18 stone!!

PG - boats like that are literally selling for peanuts at the moment. Big thirsty engines aren't very much in vogue, even though they sound amazing.
Smallish boats like sub 20ft the Boston Whalers seem to be holding their value very well. We did want a Boston but couldn't find any.
Plan on getting a 17ft Montawk with a 90 or a 115 at some stage.

I have got a pretty old Shetland 570 with a newish Suzuki 70 HP fourstroke. I use it for sea fishing and it has got a very strong hull but heavy of course-With all the submerged rocks around here that suits me very well. Its rides rough seas very well-the hull design is accepted as being very good. Not all that fast-can just about get 25 Kts but plenty fast enough for what I use it for.

Excuse the gfriend dancing - it was hot only a month ago !
There's a 3 foot hole in the bottom if you look closely and the mast is in 2 halves, the other side the keel , from when the yard dropped another boat on it
repairs ongoing !
- Oh - she'll do 6 knots ,flat out
(the boat that is)
