Question for vets/dog experts
Would a urine test be a fairly sure way of determining kidney failure in an elderly bitch?
We have an oldish Cavalier who I think is on her way out
She saw the vets who has kidney failure at the top of a short list of likely problems and discussed a range of tests that could be done but didn't request a urine sample. And we forgot to ask why not. In fact if is her kidneys there's bugger all that can be done anyway. All very sad and stressful.....
Perhaps my hunch about a urine test is wrong? Anyone know?

blood test best way foward for kidney failure
By testing for the level of urea in the blood, it will indicate whether or not the kidneys are working properly. They should also test ther level of creatinine in the blood, when the kidneys are dysfunctioning, the levels will be raised, this gives an idea of the stage of kidney failure, the final indicator is testing for phosphorus in the blood, if this is increased you are facing end stage failure.
Urine tests will only tell what is coming out, not what is being left in because the kidneys aren't working.
Hope this helps and wish the dog well, good luck.
