For the 5 minutes of full afterburner, it was the fastest thing out there.
Of course, after that you were out of fuel and a pi$$ poor glider!

I think it could climb to 50,000' in about 2-3 mins from brakes release.
Very impressive indeed.

There was a great maybe apocryphal story going around about one of the refit groundcrew somewhere in the UK being tasked with taxiing a Lightning between hangars and, being boys, couldn't help giving it a little bit more throttle than they were supposed to do as they taxied along the runway only for it to take off almost instantly because of it's awesome power to weight ratio and then land again and roll to a halt where a gibbering whitefaced greasemokey was found in the stripped cockpit sitting on a bar stool...I'd wager he probably didn't do that again...

When I was in the air cadets in the early 70's I regularly saw them fly, i've witnessed the take off, stand on tail with reheat on, disappear to a dot rapidly on a number of occasions, and it remains my favourite plane of all time to this day
I've spoken to Thunder City, and it's going to be my retirement present
Many of you will be aware of the F2A XN728 that sits forlornly in the scrap yard at the side of the A1 at Newark, pointing skywards as if it it trying to take off for one last time

My brother flew the lightning and was based at Lucas in Scotland and flew up to intercept the Russian bears as they came over our coastline. He said it was the best plane he flew. Don’t know if anyone remembers the full-page ad with a lightning in the papers for the RAF recruitment but he was the pilot in that
