Unemployment, can't find a job..... my ****!
My company have been advertising for an "admin/team leader" role for the last 3 months... 28K pa with perks and I've only had 2 replies.... I interviewed them and have had to offer the post to one of them as we're now desperate for support.
Yet I hear there's nearly 2 million unemployed and BT has just laid off 10,000.... am I missing something

Nope, not that detailed a description.... training provided etc, just no/little response. I employed an electrical support person the other week, again only 3 applied, full training provided and 36k pa + overtime for a 37 hour week.... it's bleedy difficult to get people to even apply these days !

I think a lot of the problem is that most unemployed people dont have specific skills that can get them work easily and earn a decent income.
For a lot who are only ever going to get a choice of minimum wage jobs, then staying unemployed is often a more attractive proposition than working 37 hours a week and ending up with roughly the same money when they have to lose all their benefits ( especially as quite a few 'unemployed' people will do fiddles on the side, or a bit if Ebay selling to get some extra income ).
If you look at the companies who are laying people off, most are things like shop workers, labourers and call centre workers, not people with degrees or specialist skills and experience.

For 28k I bet you're looking for skills 80% of people dont have.. I'm qualified to degree with 3 years IT and 6 years management experience and I'm on a lot less than that ! I would consider myself above average for someone of my age.... I tried to find a new job last month and was only offered one 1st line IT support role.. which I turned down..

Just want to echo the last couple of posts. I'd love to be back on that kinda money (instead of £75 a week incap benefit), but only a small percentage of the unemployed have the necessary skills.
The majority of the unemployed (in my area anyways - and I speak form experience), are basically unskilled labourers, or scroungers that enjoy pro-creating to avoid work. If I had the skills needed (which will be on another thread shortly), then I would apply for pretty much anything.

there are plenty of jobs that dont need skills. You tend to learn the skills anyway whilst doing the job. I dont class my job as skilled yet I take home a decent wage and my qualifications arent the greatest.
COB maybe think about editing your post as you may be leaving yourself open for some abuse of certain people

Another problem may be being to specialised, I am doing quite well within my company and have a reasonably well paid job. However if I were to ever leave (not likely) and get another job relevant to my qualifications (none to speak of) I would prob be looking at a £40k reduction in income.
Im not sure how many people are in the same boat having in house qualifications that are worthless outside of your industry.

I've ignored actual professional qualifications and just based the skill sets on previous experience, I've just sat down with them had a chat about what they've done in their previous career and then drilled them ( ) about how they feel they work in a team..... I've then selected the most team focused "fun" person to join my team....
I didn't even go on hair colour, leg or skirt length or even chest size.... that's how serious/desperate I've been
PS - My team is based somewhere in the Midlands

These unemployment figures are not new.
Just the government saw it as a good time to actually release some more truthful figures now that the declining economy gives a good reason to justify it.
The skills/job gap is huge. People with too much self worth (including me ), not willing to take lower position, and overly-picky employers who can't see the right job applicant even if the ideal person was stood right infront of them.
I could go into another £25K IT desk job tomorrow (help desk/trouble shooting), but screw that for a miserable life. (I have too much self worth ).
The nutty thing is my orginal professional experience is with industrial systems, mainly based on automated manufacturing and control systems with networking and IT skills based around that. The roles are £30K plus which I'm capeble of doing, but the employers at the level are so paranoid/narrow minded with their interviewing procedures that most of the ideal cadidates get binned because of silliest of reasons; Failing an aptitude test, non conforming to the corperate vision of an ideal employee, working for too long in the wrong job, not foreseeing transferable/multiple skills. Or just not enough experience or not the right qualification.
Put simply, using the wrong criteria to get the best man for the job. Or worse still, relying on inept recruitment agencies who don't even know anything about the open job position barring sexing up and vague-ifying the job description.

I find this a strange thread. I know that in my patch, Sussex, reasonable jobs are hard to get and dozens of applicants, many with suitable experience, will go for any semi-skilled or skilled job.
I have just looked through my local paper. The jobs part is half what it was and mostly filled with jobs for carers, some teaching stuff and low level IT support at around 14k per annum. Add a few dental nurse jobs and cleaners wanted and that's about it.
