Default Government wants to store your website visits

The British government wants the police and security services, like MI5, to have greater powers to monitor mobile and internet-based systems.
Under new plans, the details of all phone calls made and websites visited in the UK could be kept for two years in a central database

Home secretary Jacqui Smith says the government would only store details about the messages, like the location and identity of the caller, and not information about the content of the call itself
Oh, thats ok then

Oh and yeh, they are using the excuse that its for the fight against terror

Wont happen. 2 years worth of web logs just from the company I work for is several terabytes compressed. Multiply that by all the websites out there and you'd have to flatten Hull just to house the neccesary storage.

It won't stop them burning several billion pounds of our money to discover that though.

Flatten Hull? You say that like its a bad thing? I will drop some of my libertarian views if KoT is being turned into a big warehouse!

Apparently; if you have nothing to hide, then you have nothing to fear. What really amuses me is that the imbecilic senior police officers and government ministers who trot-out this tired cliche, do so in complete ignorance of its '1984'-esque overtone.

Hmmmm,

Internet Archive Wayback Machine

Not really that difficult. If they had the above containing everyone's IP address, They could just cross reference that with IP addreses used by a particular user, with the ISP's records of who was using it at that point in time.

Oh yes, and anyone with google tool bar or yahoo toolbar (and most other "browser helpers" ) or logs into their favourite search engine, are already having their usage tracked.

And over here they're proposing this:
Rudd Government's internet filter to block up to 10,000 'unwanted' sites | NEWS.com.au

feckin' nanny state

I thought accessing the web via a proxy server might be a way round it but never done that so I' not sure?

Depends on the proxy server. Many that are open for free use are transparent. In other words they transmit your IP address, not the proxy's, so it has nil gain.

Ones that are anonymous can also log your IP address and usage, so if you happened to be tracked by Her Majesty (Jacqui Smith ), its possible the host of the proxy could be able to pass on your usage info. Unless the proxy server is based in an enemy country, like North Korea. Although doing that would guarantee you getting on the government's watch list in the first place

I know GCHQ are looking out for key words or phrases on mobiles, land lines and internet. What if we all kept sticking in our messages words like 'Osama', and other things like dust 'bin', and my computor 'bombed' out etc etc.
Am I now likely to get a visit from the 'police' or 'MI5'

What do you think?

This doesn't bode well for people who speak with a Black country dialect.

Of course then they would have to somehow fit the entire City of Hull onto a train so that they could loose the data!

This govt won't be happy until we have a country full of robots who are controlled 24/7. So I say to the lot of them.

Dave.

To be fair, the British Govt. is not the only one doing this sort of exercise. Surveillance in places like France and Switzerland is far more intrusive.

RFID is also a reality, so how far are we away from being electronically tagged?

ID cards are not the start but just another bite size step in the direction of total control. Where will it end and what will the ID cards contain.
