I saw this on Brekky news this morning, they were asking Richard Hammond if he'd like to do it He said he'd had about 10 texts from various friends saying "NO"

I understand that 1000 mph sounds good for the record books and would be one hell of an achievement, but wouldn't those 'talented' engineers be better utilized on a project that has some relevance on a project that can benefit the public? Or am I missing something?

It will be a man with a death wish who is prepared to drive that!

Yes yes and yes!!!
Richard Noble and Andy Green again - what a team.
Well done to the MOD for supporting and giving them a Typhoon engine
The whole point of the project is to raise awareness of engineering in school kids and encourage them to become involved.

Bloodhound is a private project that will need to raise some £10m in financing.

The MOD has given them 3 engines! And they aint cheap.
They must have run computer simulations to say its going to work, my only doubt is rockets are not that reliable, even today and and do some odd things. They will be using the jet to get upto speed and then the rocket to boost them upto 1000+... hmm... I hope it all goes to plan. GL Andy Green!

The major downside is it going **** up. Virgin supersonic challenger doesn't sound so good when it's upside down in flames in the dessert....

Hmm, you know i need new tyres and maybe some kind of oil for my car, if only i could find a well placed advertisement around here that links such a couple of products to high performance. You know such an advert might tempt me to buy their brand

Bloomin heck, if only Noble had thought about that on the ThrustSSC program,

Do you need too when it's sat still with the worlds press training their cameras at it ?
Big fast noisy car does some runs and hopefully, breaks record. Car gets pulled back to the waiting press, car has huge signs on it from sponsoring companies and they get their exposure, or were you unable to read those sponsorship signs on that pic of the car at standstill

Judging by the timing of this announcement I reckon they're going to go for the Land Speed Record on a bit of road in suburban Swindon, knowing that they won't get nicked. That part of the world is pretty much the UK equivalent of Nevada's Black Rock desert after all.
Seriously though good luck to all concerned. I hope they get the money, but it's a difficult time for fund-raising. That said, what's 10 million quid these days anyway? The tax-payer probably gives that much to our greedy incompetent banks everyday. What have we got to show for that?
