Pet Insurance
Am looking to get some sort of pet insurance for our new puppy, and just wondered prior to me getting loads of quotes etc, which companies you guys use, and would you recommend them?
I've heard some right horror stories about certain companies being less than helpful when the owner tries to claim..

Weve had our parrot for 6 years and in that time I thought nah I will not bother then she got very ill and it ended up costing me nearly £300 in avian vet bills - I pay about £100 a year and it covers loads upto a decent amount - defo worth getting pet insurance

Tesco.
Cheap & cheerful.
Some of my mate dogowners have insurance with Tesco. No bad stories so far, always a payout on reasonable claims. My cats are insured with Tesco too. I have had cats for about 12 years. Touch wood, I have never had to use the insurance cover. But, one never knows. With dogs, It's wiser and more useful to have insurance. Hope you find a good deal, LG.

Does Search work now? There was a long and quite sensible thread on this some months back. I think the conclusion was not to go for the cheapest. dl

Had More Than for years on my cat and they have been very good and saved me a fortune. You need to make sure your policy will pay out every year for the same problem if you get a long term illness......

Petplan all the way. I have had 3 cats insured with Petplan for a long time, and have had things like abcesses, kidney failure and other bits all covered on the insurance. The vets actually told me that they prefer to deal with Petplan for claims as their claims people are more flexible with whats covered and understand whats going on more, as opposed to others who are not specialist animal insurers. If you are going with Petplan they are offering 10% off the first years premium at the moment - https://www.petplan.co.uk/home.asp

If I was paying more than £10/month to fully insure a dog I'd want the insurance company to feed them too.
LG, take a look at E&L online and compare their charges versus cover before you make any decision.

£19x36 comes to £684, my vets bill's for the last 3 years have come to over 3k so I'm happy with my deal.
With insurance you get what you pay for IMO.

You can also possibly pay over the odds for the same cover in some cases too.

Very true you should always shop around to get the best deal. I have been with paws/Petplan for 16 years now and have always been happy with the service. Price can vary depending on your size/type of pet as well I think.

I was going to ask this as well, seeing as we pick "Bob" the Border Collie up on Sunday and having never insured Molly I think we should, Molly never needed anything major or had anything that could be fixed so didnt cost a great deal but I do realise that it can happen as has been shown on here numerous times.
I was thinking, for example in Snazys case at 50 quid a month, wouldnt it be better to put the £50 into an account and let it build up, after a year you have six hundred quid which will cover a fair amount of treatment and is applicable to either dog, ok if anything happens in the first year you are stuck and if anything more expensive is required but I am sure you could put it away and soon end up at the maximum claim limit, sort of self insuring ?
What is the most you can claim, 3 grand over three years is a bit pricey, what was the problem if you dont mind me asking ?

I used Tesco's and when my dog was ill they were very helpful, paid all the bills without a problem. And when he finally died, they sent a "We're sorry" card, quite a nice touch.

One visit to the emergency vet... 1 jab later £140, then follow up of £60 at regular vet. That was just for banging his shoulder.
Cut head on the pup, another £55 lol, can all add up.
Im yet to have the 2 accounts combined which will drop it to about £40 a month or there about. Which is swallowable, rather than having to decide if I can afford a trip to the vet about a problem. (not that I would ever take the chance)
maximum claim limit on my policy is about £7000 per condition. plus covers all sorts of other things such as 3rd parties, car accidents, emergency kennelling etc...

I've had insurance for my Red Fell Terrier , Louis, for 2 years, and never needed to claim. My Jack Russell, Flo, is not insured, and is always needing patching up.
So, it must work!

E&L insurance they paid out over £1000 within the first 6 week's of the policy .They can be a bit nit picky over certain thing's but for the amount of cover you get for the monthly premium I think it's money well spent

can't say i've had any problems, but my mate does some IT nerdy stuff for an insurance co. and they have figures for payments in certain areas. i forget the figures exactly but it's something like most insurance has an 80% payout but stuff like pet insurance has a 50% payout.
lots of people i know have had no issues with pet insurance, but it seems a lot of people aren't getting the payouts promised.
