I don't think your friend was correct. The American "Christie" car company produced front wheel drive cars with transverse engines from 1904 onwards - including a V4 engined racing car without a gearbox .
In the UK Alvis and BSA produced FWD cars in the twenties, as did Citroen and Audi on the continent.
Don't know who was first though ..

The mini was the first mass produced front wheel drive car with transvere engine. This was revolutionary because it was the most compact arrangement, and was a first in a mass producted thing
