Default Childrens Savings Accts

Best Child Savings: Use your child for a sneaky tax free allowance...

According to this a childs bank acct can produce £100 income before being liable to tax, ie a deposit of about £1800. But then it says that other people (grandparents, uncles) can put money gifts in without attracting a tax liability

Is this correct or have I misunderstood? At what sort of amount would hmrc start to take a dim view of things?

Thanks
