Default what the deal with ringing DVLA to buy a number plate?

as title,

can you ring them and buy when they open or do the BIG number plate companies have a direct line to someone and buy up every plate?

What chance does the ordinary man having in getting a private plate direct?

Why not go direct to the dvla website and hunt for your plate online then purchase it online?

Also, I think there's another dvla auction on tomorrow. There was one about a month ago which allowed online bids.

You usually find the "big" number plate companies advertise the plates but do not actually own them.... ie: they can also be found on the DVLA website, and usually for less money, so I'd ring and see if the plate you're looking for is still available.

you can register with dvla for notification when a certain plate comes to auction. bit late now, i realise, but for information if you have your eye on a plate that hasn't been issued, you can register your interest so that when they issue it for auction (ie when enough people have put their names down for the same plate and the dvla see an opportunity to print some money), you receive an email or a letter by post.

i know the system works for man on the street because it worked for me. having said that, it did take approx 8 years!

not sure about the deadline for registering prior to an auction, but you can't just turn up and bid. i know i booked by time slot for bidding about a week in advance (i have placed bids by phone at two dvla auctions now)

The plate i want isn't going to auction, as its available on their website FOR SALE, but you have to RING IN, not buy on line.

been ringing all day and it's always engaged, now bought via ELITE registrations, but they still have to ring up and buy it from DVLA just like everyone else.
seeing that ELITE say they have 100 phone lines trying to ring through, I can't see me with my 4 fones having any joy!!

Yep I want a F1 L plate, all the 'companies' have it on their sites (Apart from ELITE, as I've pre ordered it from them.).... for sale. .. at anything from £200 + more expensive than buying direct from DVLA.

fingers crossed Elite can get through and buy it for me

DVLA sell the rubbish plates on their site but the good ones they put to auction, so it sort of makes a mockery of them complaining when you add an expensive private plate to your car without the proper spacing

Where have I mentioned buying on-line. Registration pimps boast about buying all of the new numbers on their release. "We have more people on the phone..." was one odious quote that springs to mind.
