Default Cancelling insurance

I have a home insurance which I just stopped the direct debit on. I have been with the company for 10 years and don't sign anything when it comes to renewalls. I recently took a new insurance policy out and they told me all I needed to do was stop my direct debit ??? I did this but now my old insurance company is chasing me for £139 as they said they kept the policy going for nearly 2 months even though there was no payments plus they have a cancellation fee. If i'm not under any contract as I haven't signed anything am I legally bound to pay this charge ?? and how do I get out of paying it ???

Probably some small clause that says you need to return your certificate of insurance to officially cancel your insurance.

I had this with a car insurer a couple of years back, cancelled on the phone but as they had not received the cert back they kept the policy running. £183 quid later, I was free!

Always shop around for a new quote each year. Just renewed mine and saved £90, bizarrely by staying with the same company. Got lots of quotes of the 'net and my current insurer was coming out cheapest (Liverpool Victoria) though less than they'd quoted me for renewal Could also get £45 back by using a cash back site to take out a new policy.

So took out a new policy with them for less than my renewal and got the cash back, then rang them to cancel the old one
