Whats going on with my nail?
A couple of weeks ago my nail, that I have never had any problems with in the past, started growing in a strange way. Any ideas why? I havent hit it or changed my diet in any way recently so I havent got a clue. Its not painful so dont want to shoot off the doctors yet, thought I would see if anyone else has the same thing going on?
I am only 28, not 68 as this picture make it look!

Most pharmacies will have a consulting room where the pharmacist will have a look at your problem and advise treatment or whether you need to see a GP

It does looks like some fungal infection.

I went to my GP for about 4 times in last 12 months with excruciating pain in my somewhat deformed toe nail. He gave me some painkillers, that's all. I was in constant agony, so I went to Scholls. They did nothing but some fancy pedicure, some nail filing and made me buy some creams for substantial amount of money. Anyway, eventually my GP perhaps got pestered by my visits to him with persisting problem, so he gave me a long term treatment of oral antifungal tablets. I started to take them but one day, when I read the side effects, they were horrendous!
So, I went to a different chiropodist for second opinion. He was absolutely brilliant. Trimming the nail down, he discovered the root cause of my pain. It was my tight-fit dancing shoes that turned my nail in a way that it was digging into the flesh, causing me tremendous agony. He told me that I had no fungal infection as the toenail was just worn due to repetative strain, and told me to discontinue those highly toxic tablets straight away. Soon after this treatment, my pain was gone 
What a skillful foot doctor 
: Not like my GP, who never inspected the problem well enough and gave me the medicine I didn't need. Scholls are supposed to be quite learned and expensive for their foot treatments, but they proved to be just some pompous quacks.
I have told above story as it matches the topic, and also to fortify SC's suggestion of going and seeing the pharmacist before you see your GP. He may suggest you some local application for your finger nail. Oral antifungal prescriptions are generally quite toxic, but sometimes that's the only remedy one has to go for. Apparently, nail just comes off without even causing any pain with infections like that So, sort it quick

I think you've caught it early so that should mean they will only have to remove just the one finger. And, depending on your postcode, you ought to be able to get it done under anaesthetic

There was a chap on that channel four programme 'embarrassing illnesses' a few days ago.He had a manky toe that had started to twist at a wierd angle.One of the doctors took a sample and had it tested...
It was a fungal infection possibly as a result of being bare footed in soil/the garden.
Upshot was-he had to have his foot amputated
...Couldnt resist-easily sorted by a specialist
