Question Advice?

Due to the current stagnation in the property market I went yesterday down to the South Coast and looked at a few properties.

This property will be used as a private Retreat/Holiday Home, not to rent out - simply as a bolt-hole for weekends and suchlike.

It will be about 1 hour drive away and as close to the sea as possible.

Saw an Apartment, 2 Bedroomed, 2 Bathroomed and with sea views .... fell in love with it to be honest. But it was the first property viewed with the intended use in mind.

Went to view a couple of bungalows on the beach, which were pleasant too.

With a bungalow you should get quiet evenings?

With a house in an Estate you run the risk of neighbours having parties when you want peace and quiet.

An Apartment means you have neighbours above/below you with the added risk of a Bass Beat coming from someones music system or parties ... when again all you want is peace and quiet?

The apartment has a management committee made up of the owners, there are only 5 Apartments. The Apartment liked is 2 years old, am I right in thinking that the noise reduction should/has to be better than in years gone by? The floor 'seemed' to be suspended (not concrete).

Does anyone have such a place?

Is it a pleasure or a painful added drain on the finances without much pleasure attached?

Is it boring going to the same place each weekend?

Or is it the best thing you ever did?

Of course, the ideal would be a detached large house with private beach and views over rolling hills, with the nearest neighbour being 20 miles away and costing £5:99 ..... but Scotland and Wales are too far away to be a 'bolt-hole'

Any advice?

Not exactly ambitious is it?

A bungalow in the rain, on the beach, one hour away from home? Still I suppose you can use the bus pass to make travel more exciting

Go and find a one/two bed old stone cottage with a big log fireplace stuck in the woods by the sea in Cornwall.

Save yourself the travelling time and build a log cabin at the end of your garden

Thought about Cornwall, Wales, Yorkshire ....... but, and this is the crux of the matter - on a Friday afternoon after work will you want a 5 or 6 hour drive for a weekend away? I doubt it would make you want to go!

However, a 1 hour drive would be fine .... 2 hours would also, but then you start to factor in fuel costs.

Not worried, just factored in.

It's the time to travel to the property which would mark its worth I guess?

Where better than somewhere in the West Country where you can have not only the advantage of being close to the sea-or even next to it, and all that glorious countryside as well. How could you get bored there? you also have the advantage of living among people who still support the old values which are by far the best.

We have been around here for some 23 years and never yet felt bored!
