So our dear London Mayor is saying he will keep under the 9 billion budget for the 2012 (2013?) Olympics. Yeah right
When he could have said that he will do his best given the the deal was arranged by Red Ken and current gov't.
What do you reckon?
£20b? dl

It'd be utterly sickening if we try to match what China has done. Why the hell should we spend £21bn+ on a sports event that lasts 17 days just to try and better some other country.
Sack that. You could buy 40 massive new hospitals for that, which would still be around in 40 years time.
China has 20 times as many people as we do, so we cant and shouldnt try and do better.

Our boys in the construction industry can't even push over a couple of chimneys. So how they are actually going to put something up is a bit of a mystery

i get annoyed by the usual knocking of this country and what we can achieve.
Yes Bejing spent lots of money, but the budget for London is significantly higher than for either Sydney or Athens, and they both did a great job.
Having the Olympics in this country is a once in a lifetime thing and one we should embrace and look forwards to.
It's not just about 17 days of sport it's about the regeneration of East London, and the massive boost the whole economy should recieve from hosting the biggest show on earth.
BTW I watched Boris Johnson's 'ping pong' speech this evening very funny, but what I found even funnier was Seb Coes cringing (stood behind BJ), a real you-tube moment.

I am on record for saying that all the ballyhoo about the opening and closing ceremonies is just not necessary and also the necessity to spent vast amounts on new stadiums etc just to impress. Greece is still paying for the stadiums they built which are now derelict because there is no way they can be used. Spain is still paying off the cost of Barcelona!
The real importance is the games and the athletes themselves and all they need is an acceptable place to compete, not places which cost the earth just to try to "keep up with the Jones".

Let's just hope the costs don't follow the trend set by the Scottish Parliament Building which opened three years late and at £431m cost 10 times over budget............
