Ordering Licence plates on line
The girlfriends plates look a bit shabby on her car so thought I would order some for her, I tried a while ago in Halfords and they wanted untold proof of ownership etc etc.
CheapestPlates.co.uk | For all your number plate needs! fill a few boxs in and hey presto they are in the post.
How do these sites get around the laws regarding issuing licence plates, I could have oredered anything today.

I dont know how they get around the legislation requiring proof of owership, but there was recently an amendment to plate regulations which means that ONLY the latest style of plate and font is legal. Older cars from 60`s and 70`s could previously have plates from the right period quite legally like embossed metal, or rivited on 3d letters etc, but it is now illegal to sell these.
As far as I am aware the legislation makes it illegal to sell any Non-conforming plate. Retailers used to get around this saying its for "show use only" but this has been made illegal too in an effort to crack down on fancy fonts and german-style plates etc.
It looks like existing plate retailers face either going out of business, or moving their operation overseas to avoid the regulations.
There is a thread about here on retro rides...
Retro Rides - No more 'French/German' plates and others

Basically based outside the UK. Watch it though because (depending on the age of the vehicle) plates now have to include the address/postcose of the maker and the bsu approval number. Many of the online ones do not include this making even their legal plates 'illegal'. Garage stung my mate for this at MOT time. Nit picking but unfortunately true.

until recently you could purchase "show plates" from most number plate sellers, these did not require proof if id or the post code details on them. sellers have in the last few weeks been instructed that the sale of these plates is now prohibited.
