Computer says yes:

It was originally planned to be exclusively for the Japanese domestic market, although its popularity as a grey market import to the United Kingdom, Ireland, and New Zealand led to eventual limited distribution through Mitsubishi's official dealers in those countries

Not a UK car. All cars are imports even 'official' Ralliart imports. For the purposes of insurance it is an import.

Mitsi stuck a foglight on and charged twice the price for them is all. Main check is V6 or V6 Mivec. Mivec is faster and insurance is about the same.

The local Mitsi dealer had a "Ralliart" Galant and an FTO.

They were "unofficial" UK cars. Both year 2000 and IIRC in 2001 the Galant was up for mid £20Ks and the FTO for late £teens.

When the imports of both cars were already creeping under £5K.

They are both still around the area. They even had an EVO5 which sat on the forecourt for near enough 2 years. It had a front end rebuild after they tried to donut it in the car park. True imbeciles.

thanks for that chaps.

weve just had a natter and it is indeed an import, so he apologises for that. hes not too clued up on cars, whereas i only know a little more myself.

this is the car hes looking at purchasing...
Mitsubishi FTO GP Version R (rare manual) P-reg on eBay, also, Mitsubishi, Cars, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 01-Aug-08 13:45:56 BST)

having looked at the ad, it seems ok, although im concerned at the last service date,

I had it serviced in November '06, at which point I was told the cambelt was fine. Since that time, I've used it every week, but not every day, and it hasn't reached it's next service mileage yet.

I have all the MoT certificates from March 2005 up to August 2008 and all service paperwork since November 2006. Mileage at last
service was 116,314 (assumed to be kilometres).

two years since last service would worry me, thats all, regardless of little mileage use.

thoughts an opinions for me to pass on are welcome.

If he is after one he needs to buy the GPX mivec, I have just sold one and imho they are cracking cars.

You will get a 95/96 GPX MIVEC for under 2K in decent condition.

Looking at that it isn't a GP Version R.

firstly it has air con

Second the Version R had a different rear wing

Third should be a Mivec (no mention) and importantly no tell tale pic of the engine. Should also say Mivec on the side of the car and i think GPvR on the boot lid.

Additionally these cars need service (esp. Mivec.) 5k between changes really (Mitsi say 10 but i always did extra in mine)

Back end/fog conversion is rubbish. Would also be wary of "rare" manual. As a former FTO OC member a poll on there revealed the split to be 50/50 between manuals and autos so it might be rare in that it seems to be trying to be something it isn't.

I dont have access to production numbers: but I do have a great deal of experience through Japanese auctions. Id say that far from being split 50/50, manual transmission FTOs make up well under 10% of all cars and probably a good deal less.

The rather obvious mistake made by the poster above, was to disregard the fact that a disproportionate number manual cars were imported into the UK!

Exactly we drive manuals so looking for a car in this country? Manual isn't rare.

Doesn't change the fact this car is not what it says it is. CoB tell your mate to run away.

I should have said 'the rather obvious mistake, quoted by the poster above'. Personally: Id still say that they were rare, but I see what you mean.

thanks for that 5t and simon, il pass the info on. he defo wants a manual id say, but the sheer gaps in servicing and aforementioned mistakes in the auction would make me sceptical.

he however... well he just wants something he can brag about to his work mates.
