Default bought a car without any tax

What do I need to do to tax it for the first time? what documents do i need to bring with me?

V5, insurance document and mot certificate if older than three years.

what if u don't have your insurance documents? i haven't recieved mine yet but they have given me a reference no.

You'll need your document otherwise it's a no go.

The only other way around it is, if you know anyone at a car sales garage they could possibly tax it for you using their insurance and the Motor trade part of the V5.

Try online, your insurance company may have logged it as insured already if its in the post.

sorry for all the questions but this is my first car so i'm not sure of all the in's and outs

If my insurance documents come tomorrow (when i plan to tax it) does it matter than the car is not as of yet in my name on the V5 to Tax it?

i had the same problem when i got my car - got the insurance company to fax over a copy of the cover note and the post office were happy with that

You'll get the green part of the V5 with your name and address on when you buy the car. You can use that to tax the car, along with the MOT and insurance certificate / cover note. I'm pretty sure you will also need to fill in a form since you don't have the tax renewal notice, though I can't remember the reference number of the form. They'll have it at the Post Office where you get the tax.
