The Victorians used to say that "Children should be seen and not heard". That may sound draconian to the PC Plonkers but at least the vast majority of children were well behaved, understood the meaning of discipline, respected other people and worked hard at school.
People need to have some experience of life to be able to make well balanced decisions, children are not in that position and it is a mistake to try to educate them into growing up too fast. They should at least be allowed to maintain their innocence until they are old enough and know enough about life to be able to understand how to treat things as they happen.
This depends of course on the parents being sensible about the childrens' upbringing. It is a disaster now how few parents are even interested in what happens to their children at any hour of the day!

I'm amazed how few parents bother to teach their brats any manners.
My daughter may have a learning disability but she's been saying please and thankyou (well mainly signing!) since she was 3. Few other 4 year old I come across do.
They don't seem to bother when their delightful offspring run riot in play centres and push kids about either. My wife often steps in and tells them off, much to the annoyance of said parents, usually too bothered about gossiping / getting a pint, to actually bother about their kids.
