Unhappy Oil surges past $138 barrel....

FFS

I was reading only yesterday that the price was coming down which I was pleased about, only to find it's rocking again and is set for $150/barrel in under a month - which I guess puts diesel at 140p/litre

Oil surges more than $10 to record over $138 | U.S. | Reuters

This is getting silly! How can so many things go up in price so much, in such a short period!!!

They are betting on $150 a barrel

This will result in a worldwide recession, I'm sure of it.

Where is all this money going ?????

I sincerely hope that this spurs on developments of other technology, the announcement about the new wind farms was positive news, people will get used to them, especially if its a choice about some big windmills or the telly going off.

except houses obviously, but hey - you are the guy who has been spouting property crash for the past 5 years. Where do you reckon all the big hitters who used to speculate on property are speculating now? Black black oil they say.... Texas tea.... - Can you explain the dynamics behind this?

(no - thought not )

I was at a wedding last week and met a lawyer and accountant both working in the oil industry in senior positions. Both insisted there is no supply or production issues, there is more than enough oil to go around, its pure speculation

I read an article the other day, wish I can't find now dammit , that said there are tankers floating around the Gulf full of petrol and diesel, with nowhere to go, yet. So if true, it's not a demand issue. Speculators simply trying to prop up their fortunes etc, and are making things difficult for the vast majority of us.

Who said I didn't to the above aswell?

These guys are very high up in their organisations and the lawyer is my best friends brother. They had no reason to lie to me, I'm a nobody. I asked them why the price of oil was rising so quickly and they both said exactly the same thing. I have no reason to disbelieve them

I think you will find they have thought of that, they consider the placement and they don't need that much wind to generate meaningful amounts of power, you are comparing the wind blowing with oil, the premise being that the oil supply is always going to be stable, we are seeing blockades starting and at the moment they keep telling us there is enough to go around, five years hence will that be the case ?

As for ruining the landscape, thats why they are placing them offshore, we go fishing off Rhyl near the installation there and they aren't really a blot as they cant really be seen easily from the shore.

We can either continue to be held to ransom by Russian Oligarchs, Speculators, world demand and Opec or we can generate our own energy, clean energy that wont run out, guess what, the oil WILL run out, maybe not in our lifetimes but it will and a country that harnesses wind energy, thats sat in some of the windiest waters in the world will be in a good position, potentially we could end up selling energy to other countries.

Oil is a dying Duck, too many people scrabbling over whats left with greedy companies hiking the prices up, todays oil prices are the wake up call (well perhaps about the tenth wake up call) that we need to use what advantages we have got.

And don't forget that a number of new Nuclear plants have been commissioned, so go and stick some money in shares of companies that work in this area.

When you buy a barrel of oil, what are you buying? Current or future? At this moment in time there is no need for oil to be so expensive: The cost of extraction is the same (apart from perversely the cost of energy) so there shouldn't be such a rise.

If, however, I am securing a barrel of oil in 5 years where the cost is not known, that makes a bit more sense.

If the price suddenly drops through the floor, surely all those doing the hedging will catch a very nasty cold won't they.

Far be it from me to say "serve them right"!
