Default Off to the gym, 1st time in 10 years!!!

Yep, decided i didn't want to be a 40 year old slob this year, so i've bitten the bullet and signed up for some 1-1 training (starting today)

It's a real sweatshop gym (no fancy chrome or ipod playing pretty boys) just pure weights / ripped clothing, punchbags and a boxing ring

Looks like the end of the **** and dodgy food, but i'll know later today.

After watching a few Jackie Chan movies, i quite like the idea of kicking **** out of a punch bag (can put a few peoples faces on it first, lol)

i'll let you know what happens, if i survive todays punishment!!!

LMAO you sir are going to ache for a week and half

Seriously, if you think you are getting slobbish and lazy, last thing you want to do is weights IMO. Get doing some cardio, eating healthy with a good dose of runnning or swimming etc will have you feeling on top of the world

Mate you don't look a day over 50, embrace middle age

Seriously though I didn't think you were anywhere near 40 so you must be doing somthing right. I have punch bags in the garage and there is nothing better than kicking the stuffing out of them

Take it easy on the first few times out Dazza; it's easy to over-do it and injure yourself, initially. Remember: you're in competition with yourself NOT the other members of the gym who may have been doing weights regularly for years!

Have fun!

Well done on your decision to do something about the lard, however do please set yourself some reasonable and realistic targets for a man of your age/fitness or you'll burn out or give up within a week. Trust me, I see it every day.

My intention really wasn't to harbinger doom, Einstein RA, rather to make sure he stuck at it and not fall into the classic trap of trying to do too much, too soon a la 'born again biker' syndrome.

Don't make the amateur mistake of holding your breath when you go on the punchbag.

lol @ Dazza Chan

Nothing wrong with a bit of cardio too, so easy on the iPod comments eh lol.

But I do agree, nothing like some free weights

3 x 12 horizontal pulls to stomach (whatever thet are called) Seated rows?

Well done though mate, and all the best getting back where you wanna be. Nothing beats the feeling after a good session (gym or other lol)

right two days later, i cant bend my arms more that 60 degrees and open them more than 120 degrees!!!!

the back of my arms are burning like they have hot needles in them, and no amount of hot baths, stretching (as far as i can) is helping!!!!

hope this goes away!!!!

are you glad you started it?

im 35, 15 stone lorry driver, so sat down and eating most of the day

ideally id like to lose my ever increasing belly size and really want to goto the gym.

have you tried a hot tub to get rid of the burning? we have one and at 40 degrees it seems to get rid of most aches and pains.

Too heavy too soon ?
Take it easy for the first few sessions mate, get the reps in, just not on the limit of the weight.
But at the end of the day, the saying no pain no gain is so very true.
If you are just toning, you should feel achey a couple of days later, tired muscles.
If you wanna build, get used to the loss of range and almost cramping sensation in the muscles.

Personally I have gone the light route and am taking it a bit easy right now. I get that lovely tired and firm feeling in my muscles. A feeling I love

cheers Snazy, yeah going for a bulk up, hence the heavy weights.

must be doing something good, i still feel pumped 2 days later!!!

not looking forward to "leg day" on tues. - i remember how achey i was doing a schoolday squat competition in my mates garage (all afternoon)
- we were all hobbling around for the next 3 days or so!!! lol

been stuffing my face with porridge, chicken, rice, pasta, salads and fruit as well, which is good for me!!!

roll on tuesday!

Shaggy, yes, very glad i started.
getting a bit of a beer/food gut although the rest of my frame is fairly slim / normal.

my plan is to leave the gut there and build the rest up to match it. lol

i let you know how i feel a month into it (hopefully see / feel some changes by that time.
i really dont want to slob around and more, hence trying to change myself.

really enjoying chopping up fruit and scoffing it instead of biscuits and/or crisps!!

I've had a personal trainer since Jan and it's the best thing i've ever done. I'm not shy of exercise, as i've been a part time duathlonist for 3 years.

This is the first time i've trained 2-4 times a week with weights. I'm getting good results and am really enjoying it (which is the main thing).

Seems like your first training sessions was a shock to the system, you MUST train through it, and not give up, as you'll be back to square 1.

cheers guys..... lol at the fruit and nut machine....

legs and back tomorrow, so doubt i'll be mobile for the rest of the week!!!!!

i really need to be running a bit as well. luckily i have a nice park near me, so just need to get out there in the mornings!!!

going to hopefully keep the PT for 2 days a week and train myself on the third day. then a bit of running in between.

Its great to have the experience of a trainer on hand, the only downside is you don't get too much of a rest between sets, like you do when you have a training partner, so any hour is very intense!!!

i'll keep you posted as to the progress along the way and the exercises performed.

keep it up Mark, when you get a part time job like me, you can join me lol

Day 2: Legs and Shoulders

Right, today i could just about straighten my arms once more and then back in the deep end!!!

Free Weight Squats 2x15, 1x12
Angled Squats Machine (Killer) 3x12
Leg Curls 3x15 - burn baby burn!!!
Close grip bench press 3x12
Lateral dumbell raises front 2x12
Lateral dumbell raises side 2x12
Cable Tricep Extensions (more burn) 3 x 15
declined crunches.. until i dropped lol (3x25)

felt absolutely great after this session, was a bit wobbly after the squats (felt like walking on air), also tried out one of them neoprene belts, which incidentally are MUCH more comfortable than those leather things....

Stuffed my face when i got home....

and.... wait for it, for the very first time, i bought some "muesli" hahahahha

more to come on Friday.
