Just got new carpets fitted recently, but wasnt happy as after a while they seemd to shrink and were at least an 1/8" away from the skirting. So complained and they managed to stretch 2 of them, but in the 3rd room they had to lay new carpet,
but they have stapled it down the complete way around the 4 sides. To say i'm fuming is an understatement.
Is this an acceptable way of doing it?

Nope. That is a rather shoddy way of doing it. The edges should be folded over the grippers and then with use of the special stretching tool, stretched to take out any looseness and fill out to the edge.

Does it depend on the type of carpet though? Hessian backed carpet with underlay is stretched onto grippers as mentioned but I thought foam rubber backed carpet (no underlay) was just stapled into place?
