Default BMW Efficient Dynamics

Just been reading about this on the BMW site, bloody clever stuff IMO.

see link: BMW UK : BMW EfficientDynamics

Anyone got one of these BMW's yet?.

Certainly a good idea although i can imagine the auto engine stop may become annoying in some occassions.

Engine stop/start is a pain in the *** lol.
Missus has it on her car, and the first thing she does when she gets in...... is turn it off lol

Im sure its something you get used to, but in a diesel its very noticable, and everyone thinks you just stalled it

Do agree though, some of the stuff is very smart indeed, especially the active aerodynamics.

I've got it in mine (120D m-sport).

Start/stop is great. Not sure why you think it's a pain in the rear

Does lots of other clever things like energy recovery, charging the battery whilst you use the brakes. Closing the air intakes in the engine when cold so that it warms up quicker etc. Clever stuff and it works well

I do miss the scooby, but had the 120D since December and I'm loving it. Still does the 0-60 in about 7 seconds, and I'm getting between 47-55mpg (even when using a rather heavy right foot). Only shame is that it sounds like a diesel instead of that nice burble I used to have. Everything else is so much better made though

lol my apologies for having an opinion on stop start. Guess its for the reason that im not used to it, hence the comment about getting used to it? Its a good idea without a doubt, but something that takes getting used to. Im sure it was a bit wierd when you first drove yours with it?

lol 5 mins, really ? Thats good then Not driven hers with it turned on yet, but maybe the Mini Cooper D is rougher running or something, just feeling that shudder of a diesel shutting down is very off putting. A petrol I imagine would be far less noticable.

No shudder in mine. It just stops, and starts again as soon as you press the clutch down. Doesn't even wobble the body of the car. I guess with the car being a bit bigger (and with the siffer m-sport suspension) it might not be affected as much as a mini.

Does the engine catch on the very first turn with stop-start. I'd be hacked off if there was any delay at all.

....also, starter motors draw a lot of power to start turning the engine. In start-stop traffic you'd probably shaft the battery so hard the alternator would work it's *** off when the engine is running to make it back?

"You mean you have to use your hands.....that's like a babies toy!"

Extra point for the man that can tell me the now famous actor who was one of the young kids from the above quote.

Had a play with an X3 3.0D M sport today

in Sprot mode, you would be hard pushed to tell its a diesel

the burble from the tail pipe is very much non diesel, its only when you get out at tickover could you tell

performance wise.

Quick

V quick

and it was still returning 30 mpg at 70mph

and it only had 65 miles on the clock

re: the dynamics stuff, some of whats in the pipeline makes for good times ahead.

I recall reading something a long time back that you needed to be stationary for around 2 minutes before it would have worked out better to have turned your engine off. Something to do with increased fuel usage (fully open injectors at startup?) when starting the vehicle I think. Is this true, or one of those long standing myths, and have BMW found some way round this?

No idea! Just one of those odd snippets of information that stuck in my head but is probably well out of date now

I got a 123D (I think) as a loaner for a day. Performance was like a 98 Scoob. Trip computer said 68 MPG. Engine cutting out was a bit weird to start with.... I complained that it wouldn't tick over..... but you get used to it very quickly

Instead of cutting the engine completely, can't they make it run on, say, just 2 pots? In slow traffic, you would probably hardly ever need them all firing with approriate mods to the grearbox.

This is not a new idea, of course, but I can see starter motors and alternators taking a real hammering (ie expensive) after a few years.

I doubt it, this is a big drive for BMW, the testing done on these systems to ensure longevity is huge.
