Default Friday political Thread - Crewe/Natwich By Election

The Conservatives have achieved their first by-election gain in 26 years, taking Crewe and Nantwich from Labour.

Tory candidate Edward Timpson won 7,860 more votes than his Labour rival, overturning a 7,000 Labour majority at the general election - a 17.6% swing.

As predicted then, still a very big swing wonder what that translates to at a General Election!

Was it Bill Clinton who coined the phrase, "It's the Economy, Stupid" ?

He was absolutely right!

If people are feeling the pinch the Government gets voted out .... if Labour want to stay in power, they must borrow heavily from the next generation and regain the 'feel good' factor now.

The cost of living has went bonkers in the last year or so, it's hardly a surprise.

Was lovely to see and I cant wait to hear Gordon Brown's response.

Im guessing it will be something like....

"We hear the message the people of the country are sending us loud and clear, and im........................getting on with the job"

Just as an aside I think if the Lib Dems had voted for Vince Cable as their leader (he didn't stand though) instead of that nonentity Clegg then they would have picked up a lot of the Tory vote. dl

"the tit" is that reference to PMQ's and Tories getting to fire questions at GB first ?

Yup was pretty huge - I am sure the Tories won't rest on thier laurels though - After all, Kinnock won by-elections with bigger swings than this and look what happened to him.

I just hope to god, whatever party gets in (and on this evidence it will be the Tories), it is with a party with a strong opposition. In the last 30 years, we have had perhaps 2 or 3 years in total where the opposition was of any consequence.

This is the time when governing politicians start to show their true colours. Just think of all those Labour MP's who are no longer sitting quite so comfortably on their back-benches. All the trite nonsense they spouted once elected about serving their community blah, blah, blah now gets quickly forgotten when they see there's a very strong possibility of them losing their jobs at the next Election. It'll be every man/woman for himself soon in the scramble for self-preservation and the knives will soon be out. Poor old Gordon Caesar: et tu Brute? Proof if any is needed that MP's really are no better than the rest of us when it come to looking after number 1!

Glad someone reads my posts

The trouble here is that it is all very well celebrating the impending demise of this sorry government, but what exactly has Cameron peldged to do that will make things better economically?

Please don't just say it couldn't be any worse than what we have now. I heard that in 1997 and while the arguments rage as to whether it is worse or not it is certainly no better.

Until Cameron gives us some solid policy ideas and something approaching a manifesto we have no idea what the future holds.

Well maybe, but far more likley is that they are as clueless as the current bunch. Sad, but true.

I notice that the negative campaigning is continuing on this thread.

Labour have got what they deserved after a truly shameful and shabby campaign against Edward Timpson. They finally showed their true colours – it was like the Socialist Workers Party. Now everyone can see who we really have ruling over us behind all the spin – a shabby bunch of communists.

Time to put up or shut up Brown.

Thier campaign was somewhat disingenuous for sure.

THing is, there is possibly an angle there for them to attack the Torys on the grounds of a huge percentage of the Tory front bench being old Eton/Harrow/Oxbridge boys, but not this way and not yet.

Well they certainly dont want to come out of the EU so thats a major impediment as to anything they can do. So unfortunately I agree, although not as bad, fundamentally things wont change

It was interesting to see Hazel Blears on Question Time saying that if NL did lose then it was the country giving a "message" to the government. Well they have been given the message alright-in spades! I wonder what that message is then! 18% swing is quite amaxing even in the present political climate.

I wonder what interpretation they will actually put on this message then, and how they will try to turn it round to an NL success really!

I find it so disappointing to see how Old Labour which was an honourable force especially under Attlee just after WW2 has been subgjugated to such a destructive force for this country. Firstly they were stiffed up by the strength of the unions and their selfish attitude and then by this jumped up crowd of self seekers who have taken control of them.

The sooner this shameful bunch get thrown out of power the better and as was said above, I hope the next government has a powerful opposition to deal with to keep it under some form of control.

Petesdad,

Do you actually think it would be good for the country if they were to borrow as they did before to get the " Feel good factor" back as you said?

yup. that's the word at constituency level. plus, their own repositioning isn't over yet. expect some policy trials in london first. i think they've finally understood that thorough and unhurried preparation is all.

and after all, gordon is going to spend the next two years twisting in the wind of his own inadequacy. a very appealing hors d'oeuvre it is too.

Rather than the Tories 'keeping their powder dry' surely they should explain NOW what needs to be done to stop the boat from rocking!? If they really thought anything of the country that is!

You have just answered your own question. They don't. They are all, Tory or Labour, self serving greedy career politicans who don't give a toss about you, me or the country.

Why should they, there's no general election coming up. If they had really good policies then the gov't would steal them for themselves, as indeed they have done already, inheritance fiasco being one of the most recent examples. The job of being in opposition is opposing the gov't. I'm sure you'll have a good idea of all the parties proposals in the run in to the next general election when they publish their manifestos.

Even then there's no guarantee these manifestos will be followed. Just look at Labour's last manifesto!

Just saying ..... if they had the answers to solve our current dilema they should speak up now and not stand by and watch!!

They will then be seen as the heroes and will be voted in by a massive landslide ..... people are not stupid, they will remember who came up with the ideas!!

However, I suspect that they haven't a clue what to do!
