problem is with my seat leon tdi

drove from leicester to london today and on the way back while stuck in traffic in london i noticed my clutch pedal not returning to its normal position and the bite point get lower and lower towards the floor ..and finding it harder to change gear

i managed to keep it in second gear with a great deal of smelly clutch ..

once back onto the m1 i managed to get the car into 4th.but the clutch pedal was still flat to the floor and would not return
after plodding along for a few miles my passenger pulled the clutch pedal back up and it now seems fine again

what could be the problem
