Default Train fare fines question

Just a quick question. I was listening to the radio earlier and they were discussing people being fined for being in first class, when all the seats in second class have been taken. They discussed a woman who'd been fined £70 for doing this.

My question is this (might seem a bit boring, sorry!) - how do they actually fine you? Do they give you a ticket which you have to pay like a parking ticket? How do they know who you are (not like you're a car with a number plate on)?

If you don't have any cash on you, and no ID, what do they do?

I listened to it too and I think to be honest its only those who will pay that get fined. I suppose if you refuse you simply risk being escorted off the train at the next stop and then possibly made to give your details to the transport Police and then sent the bill.

From observation...

You'll be given a penalty fare and asked to pay for it there and then. In the event that you don't have the money you'll be given taken off the train at the next station and they have discretion if they want to take it further. They could just let you go, they could get heavier. Will depend upon attitude.

They do have the ability to check the electoral register (or something to confirm that you live at the address you quote).

They do this on a regular basis with people who dodge fares. All fare (sic) and reasonable IMHO.

Nigel, I agree with the fare dodgers but this lady was 8 months pregnant and there wasn't a seat available elsewhere. She eventually got her money back.

Oh didn't hear about the pregnant bit. No commonsense some people. Suppose that's what you get when the revenue inspectors are on a cut of the take

I see that if your name is "Billy Liar", you can get into a first class compartment on a train without a ticket, or any money to pay for it, and get given a free trip!!
