Default AV amp / receivers

NSR hasn't had a what plasma / dishwasher / mobile phone thread for a little while so I thought I'd create another version

Just got myself a new plasma TV, which has brought about lip sync issues. Looking into this I can get a seperate box of tricks to sort this, but since I need to replace my receiver I might as well get one with a sync delay feature.

So I'm on the market for value AV receiver that has lip sync delay options. By value I mean gives a half decent 5.1 setup for decent money, no need for high end stuff in my kiddie infested surroundings

So what AV amps / receivers have people got?

cheers

You can't really go wrong with the Yamaha DSP receivers if you're after a cheap 1-box solution. I've had mine for a while now and it's great. In fact I may upgrade it to a HDMI capable one when I get round to buying a HD screen. Loads of features, dead easy to use and 90 watts down 7.1 channels is plenty IMO.

Agree on the Yamaha - after one myself.

AX 761 - £229 from Richer Sounds, does 7.1, HDMI switching and all the DTS-HD MA goodness that Blu-Ray can chuck at it.

This is a bargain but sadly I need it in black and this is silver only.

My shortlist:-

Denon 1708
Denon AVR1708

Onkyo 576
Onkyo TXSR576

Really wanted a Denon but the Onkyo seems better spec but ugly as sin.

Any opinion here?

Got a Yamaha AV box-o-tricks myself, still suffer from sync problems with Sky from time to time with the 46" DLP. Usually drink large quantities of alcohol and it solves the problem !!

You should be able to connect the TV back to the AV box to give the amp side of the AV reciever a signal from the TV to re-sync the picture and sound. Not bothered with it myself as i find the cider option easier.

Sky has a sound delay feature available - you need to tweak the settings to get the speech in time. I had to set mine up and keep it even after I starting using my Onkyo TSRX605

I use one of these
Sony STR-DA1200ES SILVER - AV Amplifier/Receiver - Digital Direct

Have my SkyHD and PS3 linked into via HDMI (switchable using the remote)
Also has component in, composite in, phono, coax, optical, etc...

It will lip sync delay as well if needed - I don't use it as it seems to do a great job already in that respect.

I was looking at that one myself but it won't do DTS HD MA over HDMI which is a bit of a bummer - other than that it ticked all the right boxes for me...

Its on everything, everything being a DVD player and Sky+. At the moment I don't have freeview since my roof ariel is broken and doesn't give a signal. Hasn't been a problem since I've never had a freeview TV before and everything comes via sky anyway.

However, now that I have this TV it gets its software updates via the ariel, so I'm going to hold on the amp purchase and get the ariel fixed, and see if the issue improves when hte TV gets its first software update.

Cheers

Nah, its just I am not allowed speakers in the house, my wife has the ladies view on speakers, one is plenty, two is extravagant and any more than that is an affront to female principles, keep it mono, the smaller and tinnier the better, ditto tv screens, if you can see it, then its big enough, the size of your telly is propotionate to your chaviness.

I have the Denon Amp, Tannoy fronts, Mission centre and some cheapo rears, J4ckos mates old 28 inch CRT, my oldish pc, an Xbox and a phone, obviously fulled fitted with plugs, a wifi aerial on the front, painted brown to blend in. Theres a couch, work bench, shelves, book case, titty books and brown ale ! all protected on a circuit of the house alarm on a PIR, shock sensor kept going off inthe wind.

All in all the perfect male den.
