Default Car finance back in the 90's

Does anyone remember when car values fell and left finance companies losing millions because people were handing their cars back under the "halves and thirds rule"?

I need to find an archived news story about it, anyone help?

I remember the days when Ford were giving a Brand new Fiesta away with every Sierra Cosworth sold.

It was when insurance hit the roof for fast car. Rather than giving £7k off the Sierra (would have p1ssed current customers off and devalued the car) they gave away a £7k Fiesta.

Now we have car with 500bhp+ all for less than £1000 a year insurance.
