....and is the limit still 20k for returns if the bank go's bust.
My father has 90k cash in the Halifax and is thinking of spreading it about a bit. It maybe a bit of an over reaction but isn't it better to be safe than sorry.

Very complex but assets and liabilities is a place to start:
UK:HBOS Annual Balance Sheet - HBOS plc Annual Balance Sheet

I think you'll be pretty safe with any of the major high st banks - cant see someone like Lloyds TSB going bust any time in the near future. Just steer clear from any that have been handing out daft multiple mortgages and 110% ones to first time buyers !

I wouldn't keep 90k in a single bank. It's not hard to spread the money around into 3 different banks so that it's all insured, so why not do that!
Get 30k in 3 different banks (it's only insured up to 35k remember)

If Halifax (part of HBOS) goes bust, the loss of £90k is going to be inconsequential. Something that catastrophic would only happen due to global economic meltdown and your cash will be best used for burning for heat.

HBOS release :
Shane O'Riordain, the group's spokesperson, told the media that "there is not a shred of substance whatsoever to these malicious and completely unfounded rumours."
Shane has also told the media very clearly that "HBOS is one of the strongest financial institutions in the world with a balance sheet of £660bn."
He has pointed out that HBOS is "the country's largest savings institution with access to a deep pool of retail deposits.
"At the same time, the group is one of the most respected names in the wholesale and capital markets. HBOS is a very strong financial institution."
HBOS has also told the media that it is deeply concerned about these false and malicious rumours that have been spread about a number of major UK banks. The group has told the media that these malicious rumours "need to stop as a matter of urgency."
It's all scaremongering bull$hit and a few traders made big on the back of it. Should be some city sackings quite soon once the FSA has investigated I would say.

Didn't Bear Stearns chap say something similar?
The playing of the stock markets seems to be all that is going on though.Up it goes, down it goes.
Still have no sympathy for the banks though at all. Can't believe they are all going bleating to the B of E to say 'you must save us too if it goes pear shaped' (think thats what the radio was saying)
Serves you all right if you can't get your businesses in order! None of us would get sympathy or bailed out and these are blooming banks we are talking about!!! Not little shops or something, banks
I can't believe what is going on I'm sorry but they all have had a hand in this mad lending spree
