They are based near me at Coningsby.

I would not want to live there though. The novelty soon wears off after the 50th aircraft roars overhead.

Whilst in reality the Eurofighter is probably £ for lb the best fighter in the skies today, until they fit thrust vectoring to it on Tranche 4 (if they do) then this baby will hold the king of bling in the aircraft world!

Is that the "Flanker"?

If so, that's the aircraft the Americans were scared of: their computer simulations couldn't find an aircraft to beat it

Pretty much, the "Flanker-F" is the technical designation. The original Flanker was the SU-27, the 37 is the daddy with the thrust vectoring though

Have had a few of these taking off from the airport near me - awesome seeing them take off completely vertical and dissapear in a few seconds, and doing some very low runs over the channel. Very loud though, so dont think I'd want to listen to it every day !

I thought the Su27 had that too? I saw it at one of the last Finningley open days, and it did a movement called a "Cobra", where it flew horizontally, then virtually stopped dead and reared nose up, before dropping back to horizontal and taking off like a bat out of hell., (No, not that fat git, a real bat )

If anyone can dig up a picture of a SU-27/37 next to a similar generation western fighter aircraft you will see the Flankers major problem. They are HUGE.

They can do all the fancy things they want with their tailpipes.. a Eurofighter/Rafael/etc will have the advantage when close, and at a distance - it doesn't really matter how maneuverable you are; missiles are smaller and faster

Not what the yanks found from their computer simulations when the Su27 hit the skies.

They were sh*t scared of actually coming up against one

I'm no aircraft buff, but I used to like playing flight sims on my Amiga (yes, yes I am that old). Su27 did not have thrust vectoring, but could do the Cobra, and was the first plane to show that maneuver to the West. The Su37 (the one with thrust vectoring) could do a complete 360 degree loop thing while it did the cobra.

Now we just need a flight buff to replace "loop thing" with the correct term

I thought that the Cobra maneuver was meant to give them a massive advantage in a dogfight. As when a Western aircraft was lining you up for a shot (at close range), they could do this making the attacking aircraft overshoot and become the hunted. Much like Tom Cruise did on Top Gun

Oh, and while I am posting endless drivel (otherwise known as the thoughts that spring into my mind), how do Missile Warning Detection things work?

I have a basic understanding of how an aircraft can detect that someone has locked onto you (radar switches for scanning to a follow mode). I can also get how you could detect an active homing device on a missile (although I don't know how you would differentiate that from just a radar lock). I have no idea how you would detect an incoming Infra Red homing missile as that is entirely passive.

Is it the flame shooting out the end of the missile you detect with this sort of system? If that is the case, how come older Western aircraft could detect incoming missiles, but not incoming fighter jets that were behind them.

Hmmm, should I ask more questions do you think?

LOL Luminous, I had a ZX Spectrum. I had it "upgraded" from 16k to 48k though.

Start with RHWR then move to Mode 4 for starts on your Googling. I'm a rigger so don't fully understand the technology (if at all). The fairies however are very secretive about there gucci kit, so the chances of knowing fully how it works unless you ply them with with lots of beer are slim.
