Anyone had a duff Gas meter?
Got a gas bill yesturday - as you do (oh joy ). To find its an estimate - usual figure. But being the tight **** - I check the actual metre reading....Its double the estimate!
I check the bill from last year, and sure enough its same amount of KW/hrs used as the current estimated reading. So histrically, the estimated bill is correct and the actual meter reading is wrong!
Its a new gas meter - the first bill I have had with this metre too! Hmm :Suspcious
I first thought it was a metric/imperial conversion issue as its a new meter which is metric (old one was cubic feet). So checked the KW/hr (using the conversion factor provided in the bill - which is the correct one for the metric metres) - the amount of KW/hrs I have used is double from this time last year.
OK. Leak test time, of course. But whilst thats happening, and seeing the only thing messed with on the installation since last year was the metre itself I wanted to float the question:
Has anyone had a faulty/inaccurate metre?
If so, how did you deal with it to prove it?
(Granted, my old meter could have been spinning round too slow, but either way, I'm not happy).

A work colleague of mine had a similar thing. His new meter was replaced and the old new one sent away for tests. No fault found. It appears that his old meter was underreading the gas used by about 50%
We had our meter replaced about a year ago with no effect on usage.
There have been metric / imperial issues, but those usually result in an error by a factor of 10.
As above, ask for the new meter to be tested.

We had a meter fault years ago... our gas consumption went through the roof over a few bills. It ended up with the meter being replaced and sent for tests. Apparently they found no fault with it but the next bill showed an enormous drop in gas used.
We never got anywhere with it, but one of the consumer groups said that the last thing you should do is let the gas company take the meter away for tests.

False alarm: Gas leak.
The house was built at the time when BG were selling mains gas outdoor BBQs (which never took off). Consequently there is a outdoor bayonet fitting in the garden - never used it! Seems to have fractured. Being outside it would never have been noticed.
Still keeping an on eye that meter though
