Default fuel oil for my diesel cars

I am debating whether to use fuel oil in my diesel cars. Before anybody asks, I will be paying the duty

Does anybody else use it and do you use any additional additives?

Andy - what do you mean by "fuel oil" exactly?

Need to be wary of viscosity as anything too thick can mess up some fuel pumps. dl

Heating oil, I suspect its ok for older diesels but not sure how modern ultra high pressure injection systems would cope, you can run some of the old ones on pretty much anything .

As jacko said, heating oil, the info I can find its virtually the same as pump diesel. My mate has been using it for years, but his cars are older than mine.

He uses a 40/1 ratio of gear oil, ep80 I think, to lubricate the system. I just wanted to know if anyone is using heating oil on a modern 07 diesel car.

You cant 'pay the duty', repeatedly, in the way that you suggest. Id suggest speaking to your local enforcement officer before you start.

Rebated gas oil ('red diesel') is identical to DERV in every respect except sulphur content (which may have changed now) and anti foaming agents (a right pain in the ****). I wouldnt use kerosene or deriviatives unless you are running an ex-MOD vehicle adapted to run on AVTUR.

I used vegetable oil in my 1.9 diesel clio and it ran fine, most older diesels will run just fine. And best of all you are allowed 2500 litres of bio diesel duty free

It has nothing to do with the age of the vehicle: its the type of diesel pump. Bosch type pumps with a metal impeller will work well but Lucas types with a plastic part will fail.

AVTUR = Aviation Turbine Fuel? Thought that was paraffin not Diesel. And do check my handle?!

I was going to look into that veg oil converter thing for my 530D, but as I only use oven chips, it could be tricky to source the veg oil to put through it - ohh, that and the fact that each injector is £300 (X6).

Thats exactly what AVTUR is. (New into service) MOD diesel vehicles have been (slightly) modified to run on AVTUR since they adopted the Wolf Land Rovers. The reasoning is that you can then use one fuel stock to supply aircraft and land vehicles. If you try to run a normal diesel engine on thinner oils like kerosene then theyll fail (usually itll be the cylinder head).

I wouldnt attempt to run any common rail diesel engine on RME, let alone a not-to-standard b*stard concoction based on used or virgin oil.
