That headline is actually incorrect - cars registered pre 2001 are not affected - so its not "no matter what age"

But the combining of post 2001 and post 2006 bands is a bit ****e.

And they think they have a problem with car tax evasion now

Why the hell have they backed it to post 2001 cars? that is punishing folk for choices they made before they were informed

Another vote winner for Mr Brown!

I think road tax is a joke full stop... It charges those of us that do very few miles, causing little pollution and not congesting the roads the same as those who do 20,000 miles plus in their lower capacity engine.

I would prefer the gov't hike up petrol tax to bring the price to 1.50+ a litre. This will charge people for usage/milage rather than ownership.

Gas guzzlers etc will still be charged lots due to consuming more petrol, but owners can off-set by leaving the car at home for that one mile trip to the supermarket etc...

Forgot to ad, the same applies to London congestion charge...

Neither effect me as I'm in a '98 car outside the congestion zone in London.... but still think Ken Livingston, Brown & Labour are a bunch of nitwits with no idea...

Tax raises in a slumping economy...

Woah woah hold on there, don't get all sensible and put forward simple rational ideas now. We are only interested in crazy, wacky solutions that will generate the maximum revenue.

Yup - if you are going to introduce a green tax, then this is the way to do it.

(and stick another 10p a litre on and have state run third party insurance while you're at at.)

Sorry..

I think they should charge us £2.50 for every time we steer to the right, and 60p for every gear change.

Whilst this is a total pain (seeing as I only get the car out of the garage once a week) I could swallow the tax rise more if motor tax was ring fenced and the public made more aware of where the money was being spent.

As said above the blindingly obvious way to manage this is to put the charge on petrol although I appreciate this is not the best forum to suggest this

The annual average mileage for a Ferrari is something ridiculous like 2000 miles per year so one of those plastic North Korean boxes doing 20000 miles per annum will chuck out more CO2 overall.

But of course someone has to pay for new kitchens and bathrooms dl

This will be similar to the poll tax hiccup.

The funny thing is.........I think they are going to put this country out of business

I can't argue with that David. Given that my Impreza does less than 5k a year and my 106 Diesel does about 20k a year the governments logic with the tax system is fundamentally flawed.

The poll tax hit everyone, this hike hits the people most people hate - US!!

Whether you like it or not, we are hated pretty much universally - thats why we wave to each other ...... it's proven everytime we overtake we get flashed by drivers who have veins bursting from their foreheads!!

So, we can not expect any sympathy from the public at large who drive cars to get from A to B and not for pleasure as we do.

I hardly think the country will be put out of business either

But why? Especially when there is no scientific evidence that we are the cause of global warming?

That's more like it. I think you should become an MP you would go a long way with ideas like that.

My thoughts exactly, spot on! If the government need more money, first they can stop all these expenses! And why do they need a 2nd home anyway, catch the train like everyone else!!!

Did I hear someone say classic Imprezas were the best of all?

On another note, it sucks. Anyone who is feeling smug just because they happen to have not been hit this time had better be ready in the future. I've signed the petition on the other thread over this. If we keep allowing this to happen there will be no end to the levels of taxation.

They WILL tax as much as they can get away with. They only stop when there is enough complaint. They did not put 2p on fuel this time because they are nervous. They remember the fuel tax protests from a few years ago, which is why they are pushing green taxes so hard.
