I'm currently heating my house with wood cooking and heating the hot water too though I’ve run out of logs so I need to chop up some more got the Chain saw out... cus using a Bow saw takes ages and I can only do enough for 24hours in one sitiing!!!!!
Anyway the chainsaw won't start it's a Stihl MS-180 Fuel's mixtures right the filter's clean and the spark plug is sparking. I was using it at the weekend and it just stopped and I can't get it started again I need help... other wise my house will get even colder

Does the plug smell of fuel?

Maybe some cr@p sucked up from the tank into the carb
likely carb/fuel probs, gummed up jets, happens with 2 strokes left for a time.

I would have the float bowl off and clean it out, check the float not damaged or sticking, take the jets out (one at a time) and blow them through.

This is all from my 2 stroke bike days mind, from memory chainsaws have a clever carb arrangement due to the angles they need to work at so maybe not as straight forward as a minuki on a suzuki!

if the mixture is fine and the spark plug is clean and sparking then check the cutout switch and wiring is connected. Does it even try and start?
If it does then persevere or bung some easy start in the air intake. 2 strokes can be temperamental but generally they usually work as long as maintained ok. The usuals of having run a weak mixture is about all that seems to kill them.

The best way to stop a two stroke is to switch off the fuel supply so that it stops when the carburettor runs dry. That way you don't get oil from the evaporated fuel blocking the jets in the carburettor. Works like a charm on my boat.

you run the risk of siezing the piston due to oil starvation doing it that way, although i have only ever seen it happen once.

Suck / squeeze/ bang / blow

step thorugh the above methodically. and you should find the problem.

first off

check the vent on the fuel cap isnt blocked. if air cant escape/enter the tank, it will cause a pressure lock resulting in non running of the engine

Grab the chain with one hand, fuel on and give it a good tug. Sod's law says it will start if you try that.

Disclaimer: anyone doing this deserves to lose their hand.

Two stroke is suck and squeeze, then bang and fart/blow. Not the same as suck/squeeze/bang/blow, 4 stroke.

Is there a "Compression" button on the side of the saw? My MS180 has one, on the right hand side of the casing with the blade held away from you. It must be IN, or the saw won't start because of no compression.

Also, mine is a b*gger to start unless I give it FULL choke for the first two pulls, then half choke to start it, even at it's coldest

Surely it has to be squeeze/bang, then blow/suck.... loads of women gets confused between suck and blow, but if you fart when she is blowing it will be all over in seconds

Well I doubt that if the engine is idling Mart, and when there is no more fuel with the lubricating oil added of course, the engine stops anyway. Obviously unwise to have the engine at high power though.
