Question

A bit of a strange post, i know, but a serious one...

are they reliable... we're thinking of getting one and apparently the aftersales service is somewhat to be desired...?!?!?

Any help much appreciated..!

Yes - generally it is excellent, the only weak point is the grill which never seems to produce much radiant heat and toast takes forever so I bought a dualit toaster which is superb and looks good too.

Smeg is very reliable and the fan assisted oven cooks superbly as long as you remember to reduce the temps from normal ovens.

The top area is generously sized which is very important when you have loads of large pots on so it doesn't get overcrowded.

The build quality is very good, note the guage of the stainlkess steel and the beautiful action on the gas control valves. Other makes are often tinny by comparison.

You get what you pay for...

Wink

I went and got Baumatic appliances. They were cheaper and give free 5year parts guarantees. They do some very stylish bits too (I've got a five burner hob, with fish and wok burner).

Don't have any connection with them but just thought you'd might want to look at what else is out there!

3 years nearly. I dropped one of the burners' ignition sparker down the hole the other day so I actually will need to get some aftersales service now come to think of it, so I'll let you know how it goes!

I always wanted an Aga, but for proper cooking gas is essential really. You would need both really, an Aga can end up becoming just an expensive prestige towel dryer.

Thumbs up

Check out the `which` website, whenever I need a new appliance (no jokes please, we are all aware of what everyone is thinking!), I check it out on there first.
Shame they don`t give you hints & tips on married life!

Joan.

Garlands are down the road from me. They have a good reputation. John Lewis are also good. I have fitted many "Smeg" appliances to clients houses. Yes they are good. But there is a premium to pay for the name!!
But once you start you will want the rest of the range!!

I work in a shop that sells both and yes the Baumatics are cheaper but as someone has mentioned you get what you pay for. There is not a lot of difference in performance but BQ is way ahead on the Smeg. Another brand to look out for is Flavel Leisure and their "professional range".Once again no affilation to any company just going on personal experience and on what sells!
