Default Energy saving day started today at 1800.

BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | Day to 'save energy and climate'

I thought i'd do my bit and turn off everything i could but its harder than you think.

DVD recorder date resets so left it on standby
Alarm clock resets so left it on.
My laptop battery is dead so thats plugged in.

Everything else is off except a small low energy light that i'm using now. Also want to watch MOTD at 20.00.

Hmm, well, clothes need washing so thats the washing machine going on

Dishes need doing, so thats the dishwasher. Tea needs cooking, so thats the oven. Its a little cold so the heating will be on.

Good TV program, so that will be the AV amp and sub as well. Need to backup some files so that will be the network, computers, NAS drive and a few other odds and sods.

The garage light is out There, I did think of some way to help out our dear tree huggers

On a more serious note, if people actually go around turning stuff on it may send some sort of message to our political masters. They may actually take note that we have had our fill over stupid half baked green ideas that actually don't work, not to mention empty promises.

I mean, who actually thinks brown is ever going to build his off shore windfarms in the time he set himself, and in the numbers he proposed

Good work! Although I'd probably have left the garage light on.

No point in leaving it on, the bulb is bust I'd rather not have a nasty shock when I come to change it tomorrow

Five PCs (with a total of twelve cores) crunching SETI and various other DC projects 24/7 - I bet I'm using more leckie than you!

Question: if I was to run all my PCs doing Climate Prediction 24/7, is that Good or Bad?

From their web site:

Current actual consumption: 10410.5 MWh
Usual consumption: 10292.4 MWh

So, right now we're up by 1.1%

Outside lights x4 on
Livingroom tv and lights on
Kitchen TV and lights on, even though no one is in there at the moment
3 bedroom lights on, even though only one is occupied by me on the pc
Bog light upstairs and no doubt so is the downstairs on, again none occupied
Both upstairs/downstairs hall lights on
3 fishtanks with heaters, pumps and lights on
God only knows how many things on standby
Might go out for a drive later, just for the hell of it.. You can see I take it all very seriously indeed

Is is a very serious subject.

For instance, I've just filled the kettle right up and thrown the T towel over the switch so it will keep boiling.

Its only something little, but if we all do our bit we can make a difference.

Just remember to turn the central heating up a bit too. Otherwise the heat from your kettle will warm the house resulting in LESS heat being required from the boiler - and we can't have that

Trouble is, of course, we'll be told the same regardless of whether today's energy demand is lower or higher than average.

If it's lower, we'll be told: "See, we saved X number of tonnes of CO2, so people need encouraging to be more efficient every day".

Whereas, if it's higher, we'll be told: "Clearly people aren't prepared to make the effort voluntarily, they need encouraging to be more efficient".

If the organisers actually announce at the end of the day, "there was no significant saving, people clearly don't waste energy voluntarily and are clearly sick of being told what to do", I'll eat my scooby.

You have a point, but what they say in public but know in private are two different things

Thank you Simon for keeping the CO2 emissions down. I took care of your share and more on a long, highly spirited drive tonight. **** saving energy, POWER is where it's at!

PMSL at this thread

...but PLEASE DON'T turn up your central heating if it uses GAS - we need to up the electricity consumption. Thus turn your boiler OFF and gather as many portable electric heaters as you can find (hair dryers will help as well).

Oh, and take care that you don't cause problems in the kitchen with all this extra heat, and thus press the "boost" button on the freezer to keep the insides nice and cold.

Watch the wastage live at Energy Saving Day : E-Day : Leave It Off : 27-28 Feb 2008 (MINUS 1.6% "savings" so far )

****, i just turned my downstairs bathroom light on, and the total savings dropped by another tenth of a percent.

I hope that this won't be directly reflected in my bill

Every nine months a new coal fired power station comes online in China. If everyone in the UK and Australia turned off everything and did't drive for a day, China and India combined will have made up the shortfall in emissions the following day. A couple of million tonnes of Co2 at best, a waste of time.

Right the, Tumble dryer on (2kw)

95 degree boil wash on some old rags (1.5kw??)

Dishwasher on intensive wash (1kw?)

Stuck a frozen pasty in the oven (2kw)

And now having a cuppa (3kw - 1.7litre kettle filled passed the max mark )

Thats near enough 40amps...Lucky I split the loads for the kitchen appliances at the consumer unit, otherwise I'd tripping the breakers

England, Wales and Scotland are currently using 3.3% more electricity than "normal"

We seem to have stumbled a bit on the accumulated savings though - only 1.6% MORE Giggles at just over the halfway stage!

So at 2am when most people are in bed we're still using 35GW Peak demand is 55GW. So the domestic use amounts to about 40% of the peak. Even a reduction of 10% on that is not really going to show up. It's obvious they should be targetting the 35GW users.
