Giving money to charity is not stupid.

Over the last 3 years I have helped raise over £8000 for the NSPCC. Are you saying that the people that kindly donated their money to help vulnerable children are stupid?

No. Just Smug.

For putting the money in a pot, the collector can, and very often does, charge quite alot in 'expenses' to go round empty them.

Thats before people like Oxfam have there HUGE expenses to take care of.

Personally, I'd give to a local Hospice or a local sick child directly.

Well done for raising 8k btw.

Of course.

But only 28p per ticket.
50p goes to prizes, 12p goes to the government, and 5p each to the operator and retailer. (camelot get 0.5p profit on every ticket sold).

The only scratch card I've only really been interested in was the one where you could win £40k for life. £5 a card though. Only played it once and lost.

But by playing it, you do have a chance.

Everyone who has won a high amount on a scratch card or hit the Jackpot on the lottery would have had some dimwit telling them they were stupid putting money down on something they didn't stand a chance winning.

The same Dimwit then gets very jealous when he see's his mate driving around in a new Ferrari while being sucked off by a gorgeous model

True story.
Guy who used to work for us scooped £6m 5 months after he was sacked.

Of course you have a chance. But it's ridiculously small.

I mean when you fly, you go on the plane thinking "werll there's hardly any chance this plane will crash" and go on there happy in the knowledge that the chance of you dying on the plane is next to zero.

Yet, despite being 14 times less likely than being involved in a plane crash, you buy a lottery ticket and think "maybe...just maybe"

Of course it's not "stupid" to buy one, just very very very optimistic.

Chances of winning the lottery is the same as your plane crashing, then as you escape, being hit twice by lightning then a shark biting you, and the labour govenment being found doing something good

It's also optimistic every other Football team in England apart from Manchester/Chelsea/Arsenal winning the Premiership. It's also very optimistic any other F1 team apart from McLaren or Ferrari winning this years World Championship.

Maybe all those other teams should just give up.

Just because you have a very slim chance, doesn't mean you shouldn't enter.

That's slightly different - Those other teams do not compete for the premisership title - In effect they dont buy a ticket for it - Some exist to survive in the top flight, some exist to break into Europe and so one. They have realistic expectations. No one outside the big four "expect" to win the premisership, but the big four certainly do.

In other words, those outside the big four buy a ticket with the aim of getting four number sup - ie.e a relaistic target to aim for.

As for McLaren/Ferrari - I suppose you could add renault to that list, because they will up there next season - But again, other teams do not have the expectation they will win the manufacturers championship, and this is refected in thier budgets.

With so many different scratch cards and lottery games on offer I find it more annoying than enticing.

The reason your Nan won is because it's the pensioners queing up to give their pension money back to the government via a quick fondle of the 'Ticket of Dreams' (£40 probably cost her £400 to win it)

I know noting about football but let me destroy your ridiculous theory anyway....

can i get odds of 14 million to one that someone other than those 3 teams will win the premiership?

do the other teams, that dont win the premiership, walk away from their season with no financial gain?

assuming that's two no's, consider yourself corrected.

No, although if you have misunderstood the that extent then maybe you are stupid, irrespective of your charitable work.

Why dont you take some of that £8,000 and give a huge chuck to Camelot, anther chuck to a few chavs as "prizes" and then hand over £2k to the charity.....sound sensible?

My point being. He was probably told he stood a better chance of being hit by moon rock rather than winning the Lottery.

As far as I know he hasn't been hit by the moon rock yet.

His odds may increase if he were to actually buy a few goats

But they still pay $30m to enter. Plus another $150m per annum to keep playing.

Lottery games are more popular in the poorer countries as is religion

Should the smart/well funded individual therefore stop praying

Yup - but they don't do it in order to primarily win the championship - They do it to earn money.- - In the case of engines manufacturers they do it for publicity and brand awareness.

The likes of Toyota, RedBull et al don't do it with an aim to win the manufacturers title (at this moment in time), because they know that's not going to happen.

We already know that McLaren tend to make around £20million profit per year, on a spend of $400million per year, and of course the effect on the Mercedes is fairly immeasurable, but it must be a positive impact, or they wouldn't do it.
