Why not, my wife has a kit in the fridge, cost about 400 quid I think but she can't use it until she stops feeding baby. It's been there for months now and I'm temped to have a go but the mould was made for her peggies not mine.

I’m booked in next week, using the Enlighten system, only £400.

My wife thinks I’m very vain.

Had mine done professionaly a few years back. Now use the kits you can buy in boots from time to time, which are pretty good.

No currently reported health problems using 10% carbamide peroxide in a tray for 2 hours a day for 3 weeks which is the best way to whiten teeth.

There are anecdotal reports of external damage (resorption) to teeth but not backed up by multiple studies.

Great moneyspinner though LOL

Asked my dentist recently, he said the main problem was over enthusiastic patients leaving their moulds on for 6-8hrs instead of 2. Curiously, their teeth hurt...

get a kit of ebay i do mine once a year costs about twenty quid and you can see the difference. it shows up the darker fillings,
my gnashers seem quite strong i hadnt been to the dentist for about 20 years and i only need a polish and two small fillings couldnt believe it. now go once a year.
im not a sweet lover though, prefer savoury i think this is why they are ok

Even at 2 hours wear about 17% of patients will get sensitivity.....people generally wear overnight as it is socially easier

I feel sorry for Bill Klusmeir (sp) who discovered it by accident but failed to notice the potential, leaving others to reap the financial rewards !

Yes, true. Sorry for my flippancy . I'm just aware of the many scare stories that dominate/control our limited existence.
IMO if you decide to 'add Domestos to your mouthwash', as a rational human, with a will of your own, then to hell with the consequences!
I won't be using anything more potent than StreriDent
Many years of red wine, tobacco and chicken madras staining will take more than a gargle with a sodium hypochlorite wash. Joking

If you ave a history of cleaning your teeth properly then it's unnecessary. I would have it done though if I was lazy, just not as bright as the likes of Beckham, which I think looks over the top.

Plus, you need decent teeth to start with. Shiny white bits of mishapen, small pegs look equally stupid.

Yes, I think that was his point.

I'm considering it, but will probably cough up for braces first (at 40 )

My mrs had it done, a 3 stage treatement at the dentist (about 2 hours long IIRC) followed by application at night for a few nights. Results do look good, but her teeth were sore for a few weeks after. She has perfect teeth by the way, but she had been on an 8 week wine course and also been drinking more reds after the course so her teeth had picked up a few stains which brushing wont remove. She looked into DIY kits but they use much weaker chemicals so she went for the dentist one. I think it was about £400 ish. Other than the pain factor I think she was very happy.

I'd be interested as to what Jer thinks about this even though he's selling the kits. Proper brushing regularly would in my opinion and experience keep your teeth as white as they started.

Bleaching is worth it as it is totally reversible...crowns and veneers can be used to change the colour and shape of teeth but involves remoing tooth that can never be replaced. Bleaching can cause sensitivity and will not change the colour of white fillings/crowns/veneers etc.

Do not whatever you do get bleaching kits off the net...too high a concentration of bleaching agent and you will damage your teeth.

Do it with a dentist under their supervision it safest and you will get the best results.

I suppose proper brushing would make a slight difference but as we age our teeth darken. Also dark food such as ketchup, curry red wine etc stain teeth. We offer airflow in our surgery (Air and powder polish) and it takes away staining but Laser whitening makes a big difference.
By the way i'm not a dentist you would be better asking midlife or others but own half and work in dental practice who do a lot of whitening.

Thanks, Jer, I was just interested what you might say. I'm not young and have pearly white teeth despite the above reasons you give for staining.

There's no doubt laser whitening does the job, but so does an annual valet on a car, even if the rest of the year that car resembles a filthy tip.

Just thought I'd post again as my Employers (Cumbria PCT) essentially ban me from bleaching teeth as it's illegal.

Having said that I'm a Consultant / Specialist in Restorative Dentistry and should know about these things...having played with bleaching since meeting Harald Hymann back in the 1990's

Jer is treading on thin ice offering to bleach teeth (and not being a dentist) on this forum.....as it's considered "the practice of dentistry" and breaches the 1986 Dentists Act !

As he has not actually done anything to a forum member he is safe LOL

Whitening teeth is a legal anomoly created by the EU cosmetical devices regulations 1992 which effectively bans tooth bleaching in the UK ...and which we our govenment follow. Basically it's illegal but too much hassle for Trading Standards to deal with !!

Whitening teeth using 10% carbamide peroxide in a custom tray for 10-30 days is the "gold standard". Single visit whitening in an hour has a lesser effect..the "30 day rebound" colour change is not as pronounced.

There is no additional effect from "laser treatment"...If I recall Zoom uses a metal halide lamp.

to sum up then.

1. Tooth whitening is illegal but clinically safe

2. best results from using a low concentration of carbamide peroxide for a longer period in a mouthguard

3. teeth can be bleached in an hour in the surgery but the effect is less and wears off quicker (hence they offer bleaching top up trays) and shining a light / laser has no additional effect.

Next question LOL

I asked my dentist about this when i had my check up. he said never use the stuff from boots ( iknow he prolly only said this so he could take my money lol), but he also warned against getting a dentist to do it.. purely for the fact that apparently it can have a major effect on the sensitivity of your teeth afterwards??

He said he would do it if i wanted - he quoted around £450 irrc....but also said it doesn't last long if you drink coffee, smoke and the usual hazards etc..

Not sure I understand that. Do you mean it's permitted in the EU but not in the UK due to domestic law?

There is no additional effect from "laser treatment"...
What do you mean by additional? Do you mean no effect, or just that laser is not better than bleaching?

Cheers (or should I say )
