I used to get it all the time in the middle of a peaceful sleep too, stretching every morning has helped over come it as my Calfs used to be really bad for it. Thats all I can suggest to be honest unless its something in your diet thats causing it (i.e. not enough potassium in your system)

Not just muscles... the old war wounds, broken bones etc really play up, and my drilled elbow is not fun at all right now either lol.
Stretching definatly helps in the cold weather, as does a nice hot soak in the bath.

Get yourself some thermals - like long-johns - to wear underneath your jeans/trousers etc. - keeps you well snug.
Maybe try some tiger-balm or other warming rub
does make you smell a bit when you first put it on though (menthol type smell) - I use it on my back and it gives a nice soothing, warming glow.
