Most will say just hold your hands up, admit it and dont waste your time putting pen to paper.
Whatever the case, if you are writing to the courts to admit the offence it is worth it, providing that you don't make rubbish excuses and plead for forgiveness. Be remorseful explaining that you are totally prepared to accept any action taken against you. This in my experience had lead to a more lenient outcome.

If it is going to court then he is innocent UNTIL proven guilty. Therefore any points will not be issued until the outcome of the hearing. If it were the offence date then he would be banned now without having had the chance to defend himself.

Yellow Sti, If you are pleading guilty and with mitigation, you need to show remorse, its out of character(clean licence helps here) ,that there will be exceptional hardship to others, eg family, work, not just you. Get a letter from your work laying on thick about without your licence, you will be unable to perform your job and you are a key member at work. Wear a smart suit and hopefully you might not get a ban, but lots of points and fine.
Note, its generally better to turn up at court instead of writing a letter when the court is considering a ban.
By the way, how much over the speed limit were you?
