I am hoping for a pay rise soon - need to take home around 1550 per month. What figure should I ask for to get this?

I put together a little Excel spreadsheet that calculates your tax etc - you key in your tax code, salary and the amount per month that you pay in NI and it works out your take home pay.

It is at http://www.bejowan.u-net.com/TaxCalc.xls if you are interested.

Quick disclaimer - if it eats your computer, spends all your money or runs off with your wife, then I can't be held responsible. As far as I know it is accurate and virus free though

Thanks, do you think I would be better off with a car allowance?

Depends on the catches. If you need a car you could get mileage only. This is usually between 32p and 72p a mile depending on your company. This should cover the vast majority of the cost of running the car for work, and is non taxible. If you get a cash sum allowance, this will be taxible (you will lose approx 25%), and you will probably only get 9p a mile or there abouts for petrol. You need to work out how many miles you do and which one option would give you most money depending on those miles
