Question Idiot's Guide to Burglar Alarms

As part of Operation "Lock stable door following bolted horse", we are upgrading our home security.

Are there any pointers for burglar alarm installation and equipment? Is there a trade body that any contractor or supplier should be a member of?

Could anyone recommend such a company in the Warrington area?

Thanks in advance.

I started a thread about 3 yrs ago as I had one but it needed a subscription. General consensus was that it was not worth it.

Most people on here think wireless ones go wrong so often that they are just a gimmick, a few disagree and say theirs are faultless.

Frankly I'd spend the money on stopping or dissuading people from getting in, rather than setting off an alarm once they're already in.

Best bet is to talk to your insurer to see what requirements they expect, that way you may be able to get a discount on your insurance for having a suitable alarm fitted.

(already done the double glazing & locks etc)

I Picked up a BT VP1000 system with a couple of extra sensors & keyfobs from fleabay. (circa £90)

Works out of the box. Took two hours to setup.

I've put one of the sensors in the garage!

Had no problems.

For a £5.00 sub per month it will phone, text & email you when it goes off.

I agree that dissuading them is well worth doing, but if an alarm goes off if they do get in, there's a reasonable chance they will leg it at that point.

I have a hard wired system, including the garage with an autodialler. Parents have a wired one and apart from both of us having a dead PIR they have both been fine.

Wireless saves making a mess or having visible wires which will be the case for a wired one. The downside is that you need to change the batteries once a year to be sure they don't die on you.

As the scum were in my house whilst I was asleep, I would have liked an alarm to sound to scare them off or alert me!

First, and I mean first, get the crime prevention officer round, apart from running through what you may need to do they will advise on local companies.

An odd story involving me and a pair of prevention officers was over me having some retractable security grilles (one on the patio - which was the point of entry - they pop the door out the rails, an easy acces point for most houses, and a few other grilles on some venerable windows down the side alley way).

They advised AGAINST me having them fitted

Ok, they are expensive. But their excuse was because of escape issues in event of a fire. But seeing the keys are aways kept in the room (out of reach of the window, of course) it's not an issue. And they were downstairs windows anyway, so the front or back doors are always there

I also had an exitisting Voltek perimiter monitoring system that bleeps should any movement around the house (or cars) be detected. And they said it would drive them insane - yet its set up perfectly so trees and stuff don't trigger it.

Hardly productive advice

Which is why I ignored them

I have got an alarm which rings up Gp 4 who then call the coppers out if there is a break in. I do have to pay annually for two checks and for the service but I consider it worthwhile. My house insurance is discounted because of it. The sight of the alarm seems to be quite a deterrent too.

Living out in the sticks as I do makes it feel a lot safer.
