Simple in-car camera system?
Looking for a simple in-car camera sytem recording front and back. I'm after something that can record events which may prove my case in the event of a non fault accident. I've had a look around and TBH most of the stuff I've seen is very expensive or needs a proper wired system with another power source. There must be something out there that records onto a card with a 30 min loop or something, run on battery that I can just stick onto the windscreen. I'm not interested in a view screen or anything, something simple and non intrusive.
Any thoughts?

Just want something you can stick on the windscreen like a sat-nav and press a button, job done. No wires or recording boxes etc.

i looked into this a while back. people kept suggesting an old laptop in the boot and 2 webcams. Ideal, except that you would need to boot up the laptop and run the program at the start of each journey. If you are nipping down to the shops, you are likely to not bother and Sods law says thats when some fud runs into you and denys everything.
I suppose if it was recording a running loop of 30 minutes or so, you could set it up to a permanant live supply and leave it running 24/7, but how woud you know the computer hadnt had a wobbly and crashed etc? you would need to check it pretty often. I really couldnt think of a way to do it hassle-free.
Id be very interested if you found anything.

Batteries wont last very long - you'd be better wiring the cameras. Most CCTV cameras work on 12-15V so it's pretty straight forward. I've not done a forward one, but have done a couple of reversing cameras - I bought them of eBay for around £20.
Output is regular video that can be hooked up to a camcorder, but if I were doing it, I'd get an Archos or something similar. If you want to record 2 cameras concurrently, then you'll either need 2 or a quad - in which case you may as well have 4 cameras
Everything you would need is here but as I say, hard wire as much as you can.

Give RF Concepts a call, they have kits for this type of thing and their prices are not too OTT.
My guess is they will price you up for 2 Sony Bullet cams (£80 each) and a 12v quad DVR - about £200 IIRC.

I think you would have to have it recording continuously because if you do have an accident you would be very unlikely to be able to press the start button in time. Any kind of digital recording would probably not stand up in court either. I understand that digital photos are not legally acceptable evidence.
Some kind of loop sounds best or it would use an awful lot of film. The loop would have to be digital however which is no good unless they would accept it..

Was looking at an Archos, but they seem quite expensive for what I need.

Digital media is legally accepted as evidence, has been for quite some time, as with any form of media, there has always been the posibility of manupliation, it is down to the prosecution/defence to accuse of manipulation of evidence regardless of its origins, again its all AFAIK

You won't be able to film forward and rear but if inexpensive is important how about 79p? You can get phone apps that will do most of the stuff a dash-cam can do. Check out my recording of this suicidal biker.....

I've installed 2 of these in my cars, picked a feed up for charging and a 16Gb card in it, 8 hours of good quality recording and will loop record if need be,
comes with all mounts, lads etc to fit.

I'm very interested in one of these after a recent incident . I have been looking at another HD in car camera but it's over £250 ,how is the quality of video on this one you mention.
do you have an example of video quality you could post possibly.
Cheers in advance
