Question

Perhaps a bit of a minority topic, this one...

Has anyone succesfully hooked up a Palm Vx to the web through a mobile phone and used the Web Clipping software you get in the Palm Mobile Internet Kit?

I'm trying to connect through vodafone at the momemt and keep getting username/password incorrect errors.

I've got it hooked up to the vodafone Wap connection fine over GPRS though.

Sounds like you might have a profile setting/dns setting incorrect somewhere. What you're trying to do is make the phone act as a gateway for the palm - ne c'est pas? If you've got the GPRS connection working fine so that you can browse a wap site with the phone, then surely the connection is working. Therefore to have username/password problems with vodafone implies there is an incorrect setting in the phone...

IMHO & I'm ill at the moment

GEJL,

I know that getting a successful web connection over GPRS on Voda is a bit of a nightmare from experience!

I was trying it on an iPAQ not a Palm, but certainly on the iPAQ you could get WAP no problems, but the web connection would not work using the basic connectivity stuff.

I needed a specific bit of connectivity software for the iPAQ (supplied by Voda) to hook up the iPAQ because you need to give it APN details etc...

HTH,

Alex

I have had this working on a PalmVx using the BT Cellnet GPRS Enterprise service for quite sometime.

The trick is that you need to provide the Access Point Name (APN) to the handset and initiate the connection.

These can all be done using AT commands in the scripting section of the connection preferences.

You must also set the connection method as IrCOMM to PC under preferences -> connections, I added a new connection called GPRS

Under Preferences -> Network I have :

Service: GPRS

The username and password field are not required for the GPRS connection but the PalmOS requires entries here, so just put anything in these fields.

Connection: GPRS

Under Preferences -> Network -> Details -> Script I have:

Send: AT&Z
Send: CR
Wait for: OK
Send: AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","xxxx.co.uk" <--Put your APN here, This sets up the GPRS connection details and APN
Send CR:
Wait for: OK
Send: ATD*99# <-- This brings up the GPRS connection
Send CR:
Wait for: CONNECT

After all this you should be in business, if you press the down on the Palms centre key when it is trying to connect you will see it stepping through the above commands.

I've tried this on a Motorola T260 and Accompli 008, but I belive the GRPS extensions to the AT command set are universal so it should work on other handsets e.g Ericssonand Nokia

Blimey, didn't expect this much response....

I actually got it working last night, with a new init script, though I'm somewhat doubtful about the script - it's different from what vodafone suggest.

FYI, this is what I ended up using:

E0V1+CMEE=1;+CSCS="GSM";+CMGF=0;+cgdcont=1,"IP","i nternet"

If anyone can translate what that's doing, I'd be interested!

Also, if anyone knows how to measure the peak data transfer rate, I'd like to know.

OK Lets have a go:

E0V1+CMEE=1;+CSCS="GSM";+CMGF=0;+cgdcont=1,"IP","i nternet"

EO VO are from the normal Hayes AT command set
ATEn Command echo to host
n=0 Commands are not echoed, n=1 Commands are echoed

ATVn Result codes in numerical or verbose form
n=0 Returns the code in numerical form, n=1 Full-word result codes.

+CMEE = Report Mobile Equipment errors, This command disables or enables the use of the “+CME ERROR : <xxx>” or “+CMS ERROR :<xxx>” result code instead of simply “ERROR”.

+CSCS = Select TE (terminal) character set this is used to
send, read or write short messages and by default is set to "GSM".

+CMGF =Preferred Message Format, The message formats supported are text mode and PDU mode. Setting to 0 selects PDU mode
In PDU mode, a complete SMS Message including all header information is given as a binary string (in hexadecimal format).
In Text mode, all commands and responses are in ASCII characters.

+CDGCONT = This command is used to define the PDP (Packet Data Protocol) contexts. The parameters for this command are:
PDP context identifier, PDP type (IP, PPP,…), Access Point Name, PDP address [optional],PDP data compression switch [optional], PDP header compression switch [optional].
As I said in my earlier post this defines the GPRS connection settings.

Well you did ask :-) !!!

Thanks for the translation... I wouldn't have thought I need the SMS-related items in there. Might have a play around with it later.
