Default Cask strength whisky

Recently started down this route and am finding it's a far better way to taste it.

Is this just a consequence of my fondness for alcohol or is there a real benefit to adding one's own preference of water to it?

Or do you just prefer a measure of Bells with Coca Cola in it?

That isn't correct. When it's nearing 60 percent a measure of dilution is required to actually taste it.

I'd argue with a single malt at 40 percent the same applies.

Bells and grouse you can do what you like with.

I think you'll find you are in a minority of one, or maybe a few clods. Try reading up on the degustation of whisky and how to taste it.

Of course if you are drinking rubbish you may as well just pour it straight down the sink.

A wee splash of still mineral water at room temp is all thats required to release all the lovely flavour. Good site here with good info and list all the distilleries. I have developed a wee taste for the Islay malts.

I enjoy a good cask bottle from time to time, but prefer not to add water. I've just finished a 50.5% bottle of Johnny Drum 15yo Kentucky Bourbon which was lovely, and have a couple of Polish vodka's in the freezer, all preferred neat. Bought a 63% Glenfarclass last time I was in Scotland which certainly warmed the cockles in the snow.

No, no Ted, Sonic says it must be 'drank' neat.

Water is essential if you want to actually taste it.

Of course if you just want to get drunk then high strength Vodka may prove more cost effective.

What do you take neat and how does that enhance the flavour and enjoyment of such a complex drink?

I've tried drinking it neat and to be frank you cannot taste it properly.

Personal preference.

The end.

Now, how about suggesting favourite whisky's instead of bitching about how to drink it.

Lets get this clear. If you spell whiskey with no 'e' then you don't have the first idea about how a decent whiskey should taste.

Also - a man with one taste bud and no nose could detect a proper whiskey undiluted sitting on the bar 50 feet away. If you think it needs to be diluted then you are drinking ' newly casked whiskey' instead of 'cask strength whiskey'

I don't drink Irish 'Whiskey' as a rule. Although I do like it.

Top tip: before getting wound up on another thread and shooting off your mouth best to know what you're talking about.

Oh shut up ! I can never remember whether it's the Scots or Irish who use the 'e', and it bears no relevance on my ability to enjoy a decent drink occasionally.

Just checked Wiki and apparently it's the Irish who add the 'e', so my liking for a decent Scotch whisky is acceptable Not tried much Irish stuff, barring the occasional Jamesons, Black Bush and Powers

Ahh but Whiskey is Irish, and Whisky is Scottish/American etc

It is a personal preference and I know lots of folks who will only drink it neat

one of my favourites used to be Dalwhinnie, a very nice smooth drink

Glenmorangie 18 year old is also quite nice, but not that cheap, especially in hotel bars in Inverness

It's nice to have some input from someone with a slight clue Sonic but I'm really not talking about the sort of mass-market, mainstream Whisky as you.

Tbh NACRO a lot of my whisky drinking days are over, and its more an occasional treat these days

I have had many whiskies over the years and rarely got the same one twice, as I do/did like trying all the different ones, especially when working up in the Scotland, including one of the smaller distilleries

Like I have said though, its more a treat thesedays than a pasttime

We agree on one drink then

"Shooting off your mouth" -

Lets go for a whiskey/whisky challenge. I don't drink Scotch because you need to dilute it with something to be able to taste it. If you choose a decent Bush, Coleraine, or Cooley you don't need to have an additive. Ideally you would go for an old Dunville, but half a pound of coke and an orgy with 5 hookers is usually cheaper and lasts longer. Why is it that your feel the need to dilute you 'whisky'?

I wouldn't actually drink most mass market Bourbons but if people want to put coca-cola in it then why not. Likewise the neat whisky brigade.

What I was hoping for on this thread was some informed comment from the cognoscenti.

I drank 3/4 of a bottle of Ardbeg in one night...neat

Almost 12months later there is still 1/4 a bottle of the stuff left. As the day after I strangely went off the stuff

Lightweight

I'm not sure if the bar maid in my local intentionally asks me if I want Ice in my dram...just to see the glare of rage in my eyes at such a question.
